The Athens Grandmas get a re-match with the USA!! It will be a rubber match as they are 1-1 against USA at the Olympics
Some final numbers: Good for Koga that she was able to return and give her team a chance. Japan's serve receive wasn't crisp in sets 1 and 4 and they just had no chance out of system.
Koga 20/47 (.383) Kurogo 11/30 (.033) Ishikawa 8/27 (.000)
Rivera 17/34 (.441) Jineiry 14/24 (.458) Brayelin 12/22 (.455) De La Cruz 9/34 (.206)

Congrats to the DR!
Bummer for Japan though, not even making it to the QFs when you're the host, that has to sting.
I hope they decide to move on from Nakada, Japan has been a mess all quad. I know replacing a player like Saori Kimura is not easy for anyone, but Japan has seemingly regressed in their hallmark defense and passing over the years.

Japan really hasn't been the Japan we're accustomed to. I wasn't impressed with their serve receive. When they were in system they scored with speed from all parts of the court, but, they weren't in system enough and couldn't even put enough pressure on DR to get them messy most of the match. Maybe USAV really should throw money they don't have at Lavarini. He got the most out of Korea who was significantly hampered by injuries and cutting two of their best players. Korea is still a potent serving team and KYK is boss. It's also possible "playing politics" as many have alleged here may have actually been a good thing for Korea's chemistry by cutting the two possibly 'toxic' players..? Who knows! But seriously, what a disappointment for Japan to leave their home Olympics with only a win against Kenya.

Dominican played hella well. If they carry that over to the QF, I'm actually scared. They've shown they can bear us several times. This is a trap match.

When they played with KYK at Heungkuk Pink Spiders, their team chemistry sucked so bad and they were literally losing to the bottom tier teams in league. I feel like they definitely wouldn't have made the QFs had they stayed on the roster, which is crazy since their roles on the team actually helped Korea do well in 2019-2020. In regards to Japan, I feel like the Japanese federation understands that this team is not doing so well, and they actually offered Jaja Santiago (6'5" MB/OPP from the Philippines, plays professionally in Japan) a chance to become a Japanese citizen so she could join the Japanese national team. I believe she has said no as of now, but the offer is still there on the table. She would definitely make them a much stronger team.
