What a train wreck....
Sponcil and Klaes utter collapse after being up big
Nick and Phil playing an incredible match, but youth served against "Team Qatar"
US Men's Volleyball team toked the pipe like nobody's business in quite possibly the most horrific display of serving possible in a do or die match
In all honesty, I'm most bummed by Phil and Nick's loss...
So, we now have the A-Team...old man Gibb and Bourne....and Karch and the women's team....I'm putting my hopes in the A Team for a medal....

I’m with you on the Dalcena loss 😢 that was Phil and Nick’s last international match too.
The indoor men’s, I don’t want to say anymore more besides get the damn serves in.

The rest of the team is serviceable. I just don't know who the next coach would be though?

It's not just USA volleyball that is underperforming in these games.

It's not just USA volleyball that is underperforming in these games. True. The women's 8s failed to medal in rowing. That's the equivalent of Katie Ledecky drowning during a race.

It's not just USA volleyball that is underperforming in these games. It is a little crazy that USA would be expected to be an Olympic favorite over China. Theoretically China should have the easy advantage over everyone with their population size and sports academies.

The women still have a chance at a medal. They are in the hardest pool where they will finish at least #3 and should be the favorite against the other pool #2. That gets them in the semifinals with Thompson hopefully back. They are not underperforming.

South Korea , USA will be heavily favored. Also, USA can finish as low as 4 if they lose and Turkey wins.

If they finish 3rd, they have a 50/50 shot of landing Serbia (slight dog) or Korea (big favorites)

If USA loses to Italy, Russia is locked in to #2 and could do themselves a world of good by matching up USA/Brazil in the quarters. I think they play back-ups against Turkey if that's the case.

August 1st, 2021
Worst day in history for USA Volleyball.
Here’s to hoping August 2nd is a new day. 🇺🇸

OK, i just did some quick math. If Russia and USA both get swept or both lose 3-1, USA has to score somewhere in the ballpark of at least 20ish more points than Russia does to finish above Russia. That's just so unlikely. Unless there is something freakish happening, USA must do better than whatever result Russia gets to finish above them today. That goes for both losses and wins!
Any Turkey win + any USA loss = Turkey above USA (even if both go 5)

Really bad day. I feel bad for Dalhausser/Lucena, what a bad draw to get Ahmed/Cherif team in the round of 16 and they played so well, but lets face it, Qatar is one of the best teams in the world atm. Claes/Sponcil had their shots, still one of the all time questionable replays IMO, but it shouldn'tve come down to that.
Mens team - I gotta say it's time for Speraw to hang it up on the USNT front. Lots of, IMO, questionable substitutions and roster choices. Bringing in GM, I'd rather have a 4th middle or Patch. He was a waste of a spot. Then, again in terms of GM, subbing or keeping him in the front row where he's really got no game at this point is beyond bad coaching. In the 1st set we got ran out of the gym by !!!!###$$$!!!ing float serves and the excuse is we don't see it in the gym. But we do if we would've have Averill.
One thing the mens team sorely needs is a serving coach, Speraw clearly isn't the answer there. The grip it and rip philosophy didn't work.
Crossing my fingers for April/Alix and the womens team, though the womens team without Jordan Thompson is going to be difficult. At this point you gotta think that ROC is the odds on favorites the way they've been playing.
