Sooooo, what do you all think of the USA delegation so far? Have you been watching other sports? Team USA is VASTLY underperforming in these games. Is it just an off cycle (possibly due to Covid) or has the rest of the world finally closed the gap?
Discuss!

Yes, I am aware that USA currently leads the medal table but I want to talk about specifics here.
No medals in Tennis and Rowing. Underperforming in Swimming.
Where else has the team underperformed in your opinion?

For tennis, I think Coco Gauff would’ve had a great shot after the top 3 seeds were knocked out early, but well, Covid.

How many "favorites" did the USA lose due to covid I wonder?

USA still narrowly leads the medal count by China is running away with the Gold Medal tally.
I expect the USA to pull away in the total medal count once Athletics is wrapped up.

Where else has the team underperformed in your opinion? I'm disappointed with our performances in badminton, equestrian (especially dressage), handball, field hockey, water polo and table tennis (also known as ping pong)... but I'm extremely bummed with how we have performed in tennis, skateboarding, mens volleyball (beach and indoor - just no excuses)....and if anyone wants to say the US needs more gun control laws I will quickly point out our results at the Olympics in shooting...you would think we come from a nation that doesn't have any guns....we couldn't even place in the top 20 for men's rapid fire pistol...Russia sent some old girl that looks like she's 15 to clean our clocks...do you want me to continue, because I'm just getting warm up...

We also lead in Silver medals, not trying to take away anything from the medalists, but we are wayyy behind in gold medals right now.

Team USA in Tokyo 2021 = Always the bridesmaid and never the bride. Silver is the new gold. Hey though, many countries would kill for a medal of any color. It's been a tough past year and a half and I think it got to several of the favorites across many sports in many countries. Mental toughness is a huge chunk of the pie.

Badminton is typically dominated by Asia if I am correct. Also, USA didn't even qualify any handball or field hockey teams to these games so 😬😬😬. Also, Team USA's men in general are just not it in these games other than a few rare exceptions. The women are carrying this delegation, to the surprise of probably nobody.

And the US failing to qualify in those sports even furthers my disappointment... Hey - have you seen our badminton team? In all seriousness though, I really thought Zhang had a chance to medal, and looked solid...and the US Women's water polo team has actually looked really good and I hope they advance to the gold medal game....

Another consideration that is a result of COVID is the lack of a crowd in Tokyo, plus these games being off-cycle by a year. I don't think you can say whether these factors impacted the US more than other countries, but they are an impact. In general, I would say the rest of the world is catching up to the US. One way this is happening is the increasing number of athletes moving from generally a poorer country with less resources to a wealthier country where they likely are getting better support and coaching. Also how much are pro sports impacting the US Olympic teams? As salaries in major sports keep increasing, how many young athletes give up Olympic sports to pursue their dream of making the NFL or NBA or MLB? An example is a Marquise Goodwin who played WR at Texas. He set the high school national record in the long jump by jumping almost 27'. He made the Olympics in the long jump as a college junior, but has been playing WR in the pros since he graduated. Had he continued on in the long jump after college, he almost certainly would have been one of the top jumpers in the world.

I think the disappointment of men's soccer failing to qualify (again) is notable.
