The time is almost upon us! With a shockingly premature exit for the USA men, and the USA women clinching a spot somewhere (literally anywhere...) in the knockout stage, who are you rooting for when your fav gets eliminated?
Men 1. Japan 2. Brazil 3. Russia 4. Italy
Sentimental favorite in the Japanese for me, I'm going to have to root for the two cultures I've been able to observe in person. I love the development programs in both countries. The winner of the Japan/Brazil match is going to have my hopes although I don't like a Russia match-up for either squad's chances at the final. I'm going to ride the bottom half of the bracket and hope for a gold medalist from that side. I think a finals match-up vs Italy is the most exciting for me, I just can't bring myself to get behind either Poland/France (and I'm very happy one eliminates the other right away).
Women 1. USA 2. Russia 3. Egonu 4. Turkey 5. Brazil 6. Serbia
Obviously I'm going with the home country as my gold hopefuls, but that Russia match put massive respect on their name, I want to see how far the trees can take themselves and I'd looove to see a breakout run for Fedorovtseva. Being able to see a 17-year old emerge as a world contender in real time is pretty damn cool. Everyone else has at least one reason to get excited for them. Egonu just deserves this. Brazil is a perennial threat and fun energy to watch. And how can you not want to just see what Karakurt would do in an Olympic final. I'm not terribly behind the Serbian squad based on their apparent problematic tendencies but they're a great team with a good shot.
Who are you rooting for?

Egonu. The letdown against China was the dramatic arc her story needed.
I'm still not convinced Serbia didn't tank against Brazil.

I'm still not convinced Serbia didn't tank against Brazil. That's a narrative I can support.

On the women's side, Russia has had so many disappointing losses in the Olympics it's hard to root against them after the US. Super unlikely but I want KYK to get a medal so bad. Also rooting for Brazil to do well cuz I just love Fe too much.

I'm rooting for Trump. But if it's rigged against him, I'll take da Bears.

Men’s Side: 1. Canada (obvs) 2. Poland/France winner (they’ve both underperformed at the last few Olympics and I hope whoever makes it out of this game at least medals, since they’ve been in the conversation of the past two quads) 3. Literally everyone else Last: Argentina 😈
Women’s Side: 1.USA 2. Italy 3. Russia 4. Serbia 5. DR (if they win tonight)

Women’s
1. Russia- this is most likely the last olympics for Startseva and Goncharova and I want this win for them in memory of their late coach Sergei Ovchinnikov who ended his life after their lost to Brazil in 2012 olympics.Rumors were Goncharova took that really hard and almost skipped the club season that year if only she had the courage to address the mental strain the whole ordeal brought to her. She seems to be doing fine now but I want this win for her.
2. Korea 3. Turkey 4. Japan
Men’s
1. Argentina- they are playing inspired volleyball and I love underdogs 2. Russia 3. France 4. Italy
