AWARDS Poulter-Boskovic Larson-MBH Washington-Gattaz JWO MVP: JORDAN FREAKING LARSON Yikes, Poulter on that TEAM is going to hurt some feelings! So happy for Gattaz too -- you go girl! Yes I wanted JWO for MVP, but for all Larson has given to Team USA over the years and her performance here - completely deserved. Poulter was the setter of the tournament for VNL too. And here she set 3-0 victories over China, Serbia, and Brazil in addition to (again) winning gold. Yikes, maybe those with hurt feelings are the ones who are not good judges of setting quality.

Two questions. 1) when was the last time a team has swept through the knock out stages at the Olympics, or has it even been done? 2) In terms of point differential, was this the biggest blowout in an Olympic final?

The last sweep for the Gold was 1984 China over USA. China swept Japan in the Semis and was 2-1 in pool play, losing 3-1 to the USA. Japan swept all their matches in the 1976 Montreal games. They swept through their pool of Hungary, Peru and Canada by a combined 135-43 points. They then beat South Korea in the semifinals 15-13, 15-6, 15-5 and defeated the Soviet Union for the Gold 15-7, 15-8, 15-2.

But for those with US connections, here's the highlights. Not sure if anyone had previously posted it. NBC doesn't allow inline viewing of their Olympics content. I tried to have it done as a URL link, but it only shows up like this.

From my quick look at Wikipedia, it looks like the last time a team swept the knockout stages was China in 1984. But they only had to play two matches, and it was well before the rally scoring era started. And 1980 and 1988 gold medalist Russia boycotted those Olympics. I think last night's win was also the highest point differential (+20) in the rally scoring era. Brazil was +19 when they beat the US 3-1 in 2008. For what it's worth, China was also +20 in the side-out era in 1984, thanks in large part to a dominant second set win by the score of 15-2. Looking back through the earlier tournaments, the most dominant team was Japan in 1976. They were +92 in three group play matches, +21 in the semi against South Korea and +28 in the final against Russia. +141 overall.

Did some digging. Since expanding to 12 teams and having full quarters, semis, and finals, this is the first time. Otherwise, it was China who swept the semis and finals in 1984. Since moving to rally scoring, this is the first final which was a 3-0 sweep. Prior to that, the most lopsided final was Japan over Russia in 1976 15-7, 15-8, 15-2.

Final comment for me. Overall the USA team was the most balanced team in the tournament. Many commenters here under-rated this team because it lacked the spectacular OHs like Boskovic and Egonu. But notably, those who select the OHs of the tournament picked Larson and MBH. What some people continue to not understand is that in the international game being an elite OH isn't just based on spectacular hitting but also in the ability to be an elite serve receive passer. The fact is that the USA offense was able to run effectively more consistently than any other team precisely because the USA combo of Larson-JWO-MBH was by far the best serve receive passing combo in the tournament. Those who are looking forward to seeing the next generation of OHs step in now and replace Larson and possibly MBH should be careful what they wish for. Their serve receive passing, leadership, and overall savvy play are going to be incredibly hard to replace.
Great balanced team. Great win. Enjoy and savor it.
