Anyone have any idea how they did this? It wasn't real. It was electronically generated special effects for the TV audience.

Whatever it was in reality, the reality of the past 1.5 years...and the reason for Tokyo 2020 moving to '21...made these games/ this spectacle more than welcome! I thought it looked pretty f*ing awesome viewing it; who cares how it happened.

I remember the controversy over the drone light show for the Super Bowl in Houston. It was an actual drone show that was done over the stadium. However, they weren't going to do it while people were at the stadium due to risk of injuring someone should a drone malfunction or otherwise fall to the ground. So they prerecorded it the night before and broadcast it to the TV audience and on the big screens in the stadium. The crowd inside saw nothing over their heads.

1) It's journalistically unacceptable to strongly imply to the audience that what they are seeing is real, when it is actually just CGI.
2) It's not impossible that people could be handed some kind of VR glasses and they could see "enhanced reality" shows like this. Or, for instance, sit in the stands of a football game and see the "first down line to gain" show up in their vision like it does when they add it to the TV broadcast.
(Note: When I first posted this I thought it was something NBC dreamed up, but I guess it was part of the official feed from the IOC. Regardless, it's a violation of journalistic ethics to pretend it's live and not CGI.)
