They choked in 2023. In 2024 they got outcoached. How so? Specifically what do you think should have been done differently? My opinion is that the Bruins got outcoached in both 2023 and 2024. Definitely also choked in 2023. Maybe I’m reading into it too much, but listen to Lexy Denaburg’s interview with Travis at Stare Jablonski this week in VolleyballMag.com: ”If I’ve learned anything at UCLA it was how to have fun and go with the flow during the unexpected.” Does that sound like a ringing endorsement of UCLA’s coaching? Just the way it’s phrased…. Could be some residual bitterness about not winning this year after being convinced to come back. volleyballmag.com/deahna-kraft-lexy-denaburg-stare-jablonki-challenge-053024/

Something is off at UCLA. Remember Boyd being put at the 5's with a freshman that didn't even start this last season? I was chastised for not seeing the coaching value in that...lol Also, I heard there is a party mentality with some of the players and they don't take beach all that seriously. And when you come back over Summer being out of shape and 15 pounds heavier, you may start but you're not a team leader. With Kraft/Maple, the Nourses...partying, being out of shape, that would not fly.

There’s just lots of discussion there that covers the topic already, by ucla fans who know the ins and outs of their program.

Was this characteristic there with Stein?

I have the utmost respect and admiration for what coach Blanton, coach Rocha, team psychologists, strengthening and conditioning coaches and all coaches and staff on USC beach volleyball. They have really are buildong a dynasty. USC players appears to be more mentally, psychologically and emotionally stronger than other teams every year at the NCAA championship. I know to some vters, I sound like an USC hater but a really I am not. Seriously 😳. Kudos Trojans 👍💪.

Not sure what you're referencing I looked it up in the UCLA thread. hbmb10k got the general sense of Boyd’s playing down in the Fall. hbmb10k said with respect to Boyd playing with Kenzie Brower at 4s in the first fall tourney: “Seems odd to me that Maggie Boyd is being assigned 2nd division in these tournaments. Has she not progressed? Not getting along with coach? Possibly transfering to Texas? Hurt? She only lost 6 games last year at the 1's. She's at the fours again in Santa Monica this weekend.” I later posted: “This past weekend, Maggie Boyd played with freshman Harper Cooper at what is essentially 7th Bruin pair in the AA bracket. This pattern of playing down doesn’t make sense to me. Unless the Bruins are planning to sandbag Boyd at 5s this year like they did with Newberry/Whitmarsh last year… 😄” Speaking of coaching decisions and getting outcoached at 2023 NCAA Finals…. Newberry/Whitmarsh played 2s at 2022 Gulf Shores but were sandbagged at the 5s in 2023 after Newberry’s shoulder injury and recovery. Bruins won 1s and 5s in the 2023 Finals. Could the sandbagging of Newberry/Whitmarsh have caused the loss? If Newberry/Whitmarsh had played 2s where they should have, then VanWinkle/Brennan, Hallgren/Powers, and Monserez/Smith might have had a better chance to win playing lower courts. Or you could argue that they would have choked anyways. 🤷🏻♂️

More sage wisdom from the guy who told us that USC "cannot win" the championship this year and guaranteed that UCLA would win. I do think TCU deserves to be preseason ranked number 1 with the spaniards returning to the team post-olympics. They will have incredible strength at the top of the lineup which will provide them with lots of flexibility in their 3-5 pairs. In my defense, I had no idea UCLA gonna choke two years in a row ( to USC of all teams) Was Dain winning the national championship 4 years in a row whilst staying in the top 4 that whole time just a fluke? I think not. I wouldn't count them out, the last 2 years were hardly free rides for USC.

Heard VanDeusen is heading to Florida Atlantic Suprised there wasnt 1-2 more out of that class. At some point during the school year, Sterling Fischer was no longer on the team. Everyone else from that class should have a shot at a starting role next season.

Rob Espero’s interview with Ashley Pater gives the tidbit that Ashley has committed to playing the summer with Sarah Wood at assorted AVP tournaments. I was a bit concerned when Sarah Wood played many of the last few months with Alexa Fernandez, the incoming UCLA recruit. Ashley reminds me of the best five star high school football players who recruit the other highest rated recruits to play with them. 30:14 of the interview is when Rob asks Ashley about her summer plans.

Next year's USC Beach team is still going to be loaded. They've got Maya Gessner (Cal) and Zoey Henson (Washington) transferring in. Then you've got arguably the best player/blocker of 2024 in Kennedy Coakley (who is playing international tournaments with Brooke Sweat) along wity Macy Bolyard (NC) and Calinda Kok (CAN) who have got excellent winning resumes in Jrs. Adding to the current roster of Bailey Showalter, Madi White, Madi Goellner, Gabby Walker (I believe her younger sister is also a USC commit), Mabyn Thomas, and Grace Hong and Dain still has a LOT to work with. Oh, and for 2025, one of the most exciting players to watch who is also a commit, Kyra Zaengle out of Laguna Beach.
