Just got back from the game...what an entertaining match. UCLA was right there but couldn't close. Both left sides played well but there was zero production elsewhere and I thought the setter was far too predictable, never going against the grain or mixing it up which allowed for USD to camp out and get a ton of blocks. Mac May was terrific. The other left (don't know her name) did quite well. When she got an in system set she was absolutely lethal and could fly. Reminded me of Angie Pressley out there, although maybe not quite as athletic/powerful as Pressley was.
Benbow was unreal for USD, she dug several straight up bombs by Mac May. USD's setter distributed quite well and I thought set a great match. USD in general does a fabulous job of training their setters--both Gengenbacher and Newsome were also fantastic at distributing the offense and giving hitters well located balls, often against 1 blocker. Good crowd on hand tonight with tons of club volleyball girls in attendance. Great first match to attend this year.

This game was good experience for the San Diego team. Now they are going to be even better when Lukes gets back from her injury. Shout out to Benbow, she really did a fantastic job defensively tonight. Also big shoutout to the freshman Emily Wilson for not backing down and continuing to be aggressive throughout the night. This is definitely good experience for her.
I also really like what Blackwell brings to this team. I think she brings a presence that has been missing in the middle for a while for USD.

Wow, that was a very entertaining match!! For USD to win that without Lukes is huge and should give them a needed boost of confidence heading into league. Benbow played out of her mind great tonight

May I feel could be like a real superstar but she lacks killer instinct I want to see her pound it and really get after it sometimes she’s too safe I’ll eat crow she hit .308 with 10 errors and I assure you some of those were not her fault as the setting was questionable to say the least. She went beast mode. 30 k 65 A. Absolutely crazy.

Crazy theory: May back on the right, since it seems she can get kills there regardless of who's setting. Sealy tried to sell that to her but she is not buying it. She wants the attempts.she played opposite her freshman year and was not, happy with the lack of sets to her.

The problem is Martin is a transfer from a P5 program. UCLA's secret formula for setting success requires a midmajor transfer Too bad another PAC team got the best midmajor setter 👀

Atkinson/Drews at Purdue. The problem was May was a 3-rotation OPP as a freshman. She was moved there because Mosser was the better passer. With the right setter, May would get all the attempts as a 6-rotation OPP and let Luper/McCall handle the passing at OH. Now I could see May wanting to stay at OH because she knows that's what's best for her on the international level. The more reps passing and playing middle back are definitely beneficial to her as a future USA national team member. But OPP does not equal less attempts unless you have really bad passing and a decent-at-best setter.

I do agree with your first statement but she wasn’t moved to opposite becos Mosser was better at passing it was becos Mosser was worst at the opp position. May was pac 12 FOW and then didn’t win any once she was moved to opp. Sealy wanted her to opp again her soph year but she will have none of it. She wants to be a 6 rotations OH. It is not her problem the stupid coach drove out TWV andhe needed her to fill TWV’s role. I am happy she stood up for herself

Okay, I was wondering why the consternation among the UCLA crowd from losing to USD. The Toreros not having Lukes makes it worse. Otherwise, yeah, USD is always a threat, and the worst thing about losing to them is that you may get unfairly sent there for the first 2 rounds with both teams in the top 25 objectively (although the inverse has worked against USD a lot too). It stinks, either way, when the teams are at that level.

Talking about moving the best OH in the country to Opp... She's only hitting .282 on the year and terminating 41% of her swings!
