That match never seemed to be in doubt, did it? Get ready, Wolverines. Here we come! Um yeah it definitely did. Thank the lord for Landfair but we absolutely need more consistency from Wenaas and the middles.

Happy MN could pull it out. Not happy they were in that position, but at least they found a way.

When things aren't going well Wenaas gets gunshy. Even Samedy hit softly after a few errors. But Shaff hardly ever gave her a set she could tool the block. As I think I mentioned before, with no middle to worry about Wenaas was facing 4 hands in a wellformed block.
Kudos to CC and Rachel for consistently good passes later in the match. I'm sure our sideout % went way up.
MN was fortunate that Lesiak had to sit. No idea what was the story there.
Temi is just an awesome player, willing to strike a kill from almost anywhere. How many kills did she score from tips?
Inserting Miyabe paid dividends when she received sets she could do something with. If you aren't going to keep the opp's MB more at home you HAVE to give the left pins a better angle.

Sorry, couldn't resist it; when somebody tees one up like that....)

Per the stuck and so not-final stats, an interesting comparison: Thonas-Ailara - 21 kills, 13 errors, 56 swings, .143 Samedy - 23 kills, 15 errors, 69 swings, .116 Whoa. It definitely makes a difference perception-wise when the errors are super wild versus blocks or tips that don't clear the net form the back row. That is a LOT of errors from Samedy.

Landfair was critical to this win. Best I’ve seen her play in a long time, and kudos to Minnesota for saving 4? 5? match points there in the fourth. Samedy was not herself tonight but a lot of the sets by Shaff were very poor. I was happy to see Rubright get some big stuffs late in set 5. Wenaas needs to figure it out or Landfair/Miyabe deserve to play in her place. Also I have to give kudos to Kilkelly in particular, her serving was good tonight and she played some of the best backcourt I’ve seen her play in a while. Of course hats off to NW. What a scare! Temi is the real deal and I really like their setter. The Gophers did indeed fight off four match points against them.

If Hugh does not believe in McMen as a starting setter, then I am to the point after matches like this to try Kilkelly at setting and move Miyabe and Shaff to middle with Landfair, Wenaas and Samedy at pins
Why not it's been some crazy Gopher volleyball so far this season, it might as well get crazier.

McMen will never be the starter as setter. One reason is supposedly because of her height at the net. But seriously, how many blocks does Shaff get in the match especially when really needed? She's averaging about .6/set. That's better than SSS in 2018 or Kylie in 2019 (both around .4/set) and much better than Bailey in 2019 when she played a lot. But blocking points aren't the whole blocking story, of course.

Minn hit under 100 in the fifth set. Good thing NW was even worse, far worse. minus 300 or thereabouts.

whether she is as good as her height might suggest isn't the same question as to whether she is better than the average setter at blocking.
