Wouldn't be shocked to see Rubright take the second middle spot.

If Hugh does not believe in McMen as a starting setter, then I am to the point after matches like this to try Kilkelly at setting and move Miyabe and Shaff to middle with Landfair, Wenaas and Samedy at pins Why not it's been some crazy Gopher volleyball so far this season, it might as well get crazier. What ?!? Or maybe just pick positions out of a hat.

'Escape From Welsh-Ryan.' Now, on streaming services everywhere! Watch what happens when a downtrodden volleyball team, fleeing oppression and brutality in Wisconsin get tripped up on what they thought was a clear path home. You'll scream, you'll cry, and you might just lose it completely." Don't miss the sequel, coming out next week, "Escape from Cliff Keen." Watch your favorite team try to survive the plunge off the old pool's Top 25' diving platform. Rated 'R' for intense violence and chaos.

It will be "Escape from Crisler" next weekend, not nearly as scary a venue. But it could very well be a sequel to the 5 set match they played there in 2019.

whether she is as good as her height might suggest isn't the same question as to whether she is better than the average setter at blocking. Better than average or good enough for a program looking to be elite?

I don't know how to answer that in part because, as a mere fan, I don't have access to more advanced blocking stats, e.g., block touches, that might shed light on how well she is doing on that front, and in part because blocking isn't nearly as important as how well a player sets the hitters. You don't want your setter to be a blocking liabilty. But as long as she can hold her own, blocking just isn't the metric that separates setters on elite teams from setters on non-elite teams. All I know is her blocks per set figures, while less than Carlini as a senior (roughly .8/set), compare favorably with those of SSS and Kylie Miller, the gold standards of Minnesota setters, as does her digs per set. I agree that I, like many fans, were hoping that she would be, in addition to a top setting setter, a blocking machine, given her height, and that she hasn't been like a second middle. Again, though, not as good as hoped for isn't the same as not good in an absolute or relevant sense. Right now, the Gophers' weakness is its offense, not its defense. Opponents are hitting only .172. But the offense is hitting only .232. The latter isn't bad, but it's far from elite.

Better than average or good enough for a program looking to be elite? I think Shaff is/will be a better all-around volleyball player than SSS or Miller. She is a smart player. SSS and Miller definitely had much better hands and quickness for setting, but Shaff has the edge on defense and serving already, as a sophomore. I understand we are frustrated that she is not the quick tempo setter that we were hoping for, but I think she brings other gifts to the show. She is still very athletic for being 6'3". Hugh knew what he was getting when he signed her, so they must have hope that they can train her to get her where she needs to be. It may not be until the 2nd half of her career that she gets there. I think he trains his athletes to get them ready to play professionally, not necessarily to win all their matches in college. I get frustrated as a fan too, but perspective, people.

Still amazed that Steph gets all the credit when she does well and Mel gets all the blame when Steph does not do well. Makes total sense.
But not as amazed as I am by the people who seem to think hitters should feel like they are hitting off a tee. Just take any approach you want and the ball will be right there at your hitting hand.
Nor as amazed by the lack of support for a kid setting with a bum leg.
Nice match, Taylor. Let's just hope the Gophs don't ever meet a team that slows down Wenaas, Samedy AND Landfair. That's going to get them out of the gym faster than a match with the Badgers. Oh, wait.
Ciao again.

My thing with Minnesota right now, is, who are their middles? Rubright? Myers? Husemann? Such a big drop off between these three and Morgan/Pittman, imo. Hope they can figure their middle situation out.
