Which is what I would like to see if she could/would do it. My mind is thinking about how the converted MB to OH (e.g. Houston, Mason, Boogaard, Castillo, Hartong, Willoughby, etc..) Hawaii's had, all could bang away from the back row. You do realize this is something I have heard of no middles doing in top leagues anytime recently, right? Igiede does really well in her service rotation, Rettke hit some pipe sets for kills in hers in 2019, which was sick, but middles, even those who are good defensively for middles, then get subbed out after that rotation. Which is why I would not mind seeing what Amber could do. Nothing more than a curiosity on part. Right now, Hawaii does not feel the need to find another back row attacker, since they're pretty much stacked with OH that can do that. So I get why she's subbed out.

It constrains them that they can't lose in a one bid league at this point. They nearly had a horrible loss to Fullerton at home. They need to find what is the best lineup, at this point, and play that. I think they may have found it, so they just need to get it down at this point and win key matches. If they do get to the NCAA tournament, they can be a tough out, but the margin for error to do that is slim.

Now is not the time to experiment. Robyn can play with lineups during the off-season but not now. With only 20 per week to work as a team, any moment fooling around with what is working is wasting time.
We need Amber to continue to improve and step up her game as a MB. Her being a 6 rotation player can wait for next year.

After watching this game, I am very impressed with the way Hawai'i played, it reminds me of the '96 team Robyn and Angelica led.
Lang running her middles quick and fast, just like Robyn did then.
Igiede looking like Ljungqvist, running the front court both offensively and defensively, even getting down and dirty in the back row. I love that in a MB!
Akana bombing balls like her mom did, while also contributing with key blocks as well.
BVS looks like Therese Crawford, getting blistering kills from the OH, with even better defense and passing.
Williams very much like Goods from that year as well.
Ikenaga reminding me of Nalani Yama%*$#a.
The cohesiveness of this team is really showing and I like what I'm seeing so far! Keep it up Rainbow Wahine!

Again, it is just out of my own curiosity since she stays in to serve anyway, which means she's already playing back row. And allowing her to play back row, I'd classify that as Hawaii experimenting with Amber during a season and during matches.
By the way, it is not like if she were to take swings from the back row, she'd be taking as many sets the OH in the back row take per match. Unless of course, she's money at getting kills from back there.

I can definitely see her playing back row as she covers and reads the tips very well. The only thing I'd like to see her control better is the hard angle shots, whether they are coming off the block or not. But I am loving what I'm seeing from Igiede!

It could happen by the end of the BWC season. Would love to see Amber attack from the back row. If she is able to, Robyn will then allow Amber to be a 6 rotation player. Not only does Amber have to show that she play back row defense, but she has to also show that she can attack from the back row, if she wants to be a 6 rotation player. Which is what I would like to see if she could/would do it. My mind is thinking about how the converted MB to OH (e.g. Houston, Mason, Boogaard, Castillo, Hartong, Willoughby, etc..) Hawaii's had, all could bang away from the back row. i could be wrong, but i think most of this list of players were already OHs coming into the program. houston, mason, boogard, castillo and willoughby came in already intending to play the outside hitter role. maybe they played some MB in their high school or club careers, but their conversion to OH didn't happen while just at hawaii. only hartong on that list above converted from MB to OH during college. and shoji gave her a long, steady period to make the change. during her sophomore year (when she was an AA as a middle), there were many times shoji would switch the lineup to let her play OH for a full 3rd, runaway set. and then in the summer between her sophomore and junior years (when she started full time as an OH), shoji sent her up to colorado to participate in the USAV national team development program to tryout and train as an outside hitter. so, hartong's conversion was long in the works, and that certainly helped her. the transition was intentional, and not meant as a stop-gap measure. off hand, i think the MBs from hawaii who converted to MB (where they actually started as an MB at hawaii first, then switched to OH) were ... teee williams, kee williams, maja gustin ... and of course, hartong. i think tanja nikolic also made the switch, but it was less succssful.

Good win over a good Cal Poly team. Poly's freshman are very good! We're going to have some good future battles against them. Looks like the UH/Cal Poly rivalry will be going for some time to come! we got some good freshmen too ... hehe ... but i know what you mean ... looking forward to some fun battles with cal poly in the coming years.
