Should be a great match. If it were based completely on how spring season played out and how the teams have changed since then, BYU should keep the advantage. This BYU team is much improved from the spring and didn’t lose any key players. They did upgrade quite a bit. The spring team handled USD twice, with Frohling, Lukes, Pries, Fayad, and Wiblin. Anything can happen though, I think it will be a battle. I haven’t watched as much San Diego as much this year so I’m not sure if they are also a better team than they were in the spring. They definitely had a quite a few injuries in the spring and seem to be a lot stronger in the middle department this fall. Well, Dodson transferred to Northwestern, but Gneiting coming back from her mission more than made up for it. Overall, I agree that BYU is better than they were in the spring. As for San Diego, they were plagued by setting issues all season in the spring, which is one of the main reasons that I think BYU was able to handle them both times. I also haven't seen as much San Diego this year, so I'm not sure if that's still a problem. Losing Wiblin obviously hurts. I mean they still have the same setters, so it’s not like that has changed. I’m not sure what issues you mean though, so depending on what you’re taking about maybe they have worked through those issues?

The drop-off from Newsome the previous year was massive. I thought maybe they've improved?

When San Diego beat BYU in Provo in 2019, Frohling was a freshman, and BYU's block/defense could not stop her. The setting was superb in that match, and Frohling got stronger and stronger as the match wore on. Last year's match in Provo was weird because she was so ineffective. The sets were all over the place, and she was consistently hitting long, even on the sets that looked pretty good. She was out of rhythm the whole match, as was the rest of the team. Every hitter struggled with the inconsistent setting, but it really took her out of the match more than the others. I don't think there is any way that the setting can be as bad as it was in the spring, when they had so many interruptions and clearly lacked practice time. They have the hitters (and blockers), so if they can get a good setting match from Terçariol (and/or Madill), this should be a back-and-forth battle.

I'm still looking forward to one of the USD setters having that remarkable improvement that Newsome, Gengenbacher, etc. have had under Petrie.

I'm still looking forward to one of the USD setters having that remarkable improvement that Newsome, Gengenbacher, etc. have had under Petrie. It's definitely been hard for them with COVID. I don't think either setter has stuck out as way better than the other, but I like Madill better. Both setters are equally good with location, but Madill has a stronger attack, grittier defence, and runs the middle more. She's senior to Terçariol and ran the team with Newsome in her freshman year. Having said this, it seems the USD coaching staff favour Terçariol, who seems to have stronger serving and blocking skills. The team also just won against LMU in 5 sets (Terçariol set the 1st set loss, Madill set the 2nd set loss, Terçariol set the next 3 set wins). IMO this means Terçariol gets the start tonight, but USD is not averse to switching their setter when things start to go wrong. This has worked wonderfully for them this season...Madill and Terçariol have different styles and teams across the net often get tripped up when USD switches their setters in mid-match...this could be something USD tries to pull against BYU tonight.

Playing at Smith is a huge advantage for BYU. BYU should win. 🏐

Match is starting. Pries is not in the lineup. Emily Wilson is starting at OH for San Diego.
Madi Allen is back at libero for BYU

At 20-10, San Diego yanked Tercariol and put Madill in to set.
