Cook on UW's defense: "I challenged our team to be better defensively in that third set and was really excited by what I saw. A glimpse into what we're capable of."
That level of consistent defensive effort and execution would produce a Pac 12 championship.

I agree, props to Cal, their serve receive and passing overall was really good, and they did it with Mirkovic who had to play libero tonight (19 digs) BERGMARK had a great match

But UW is not inspiring confidence. Especially after eking out a win over a team that was coming into Hec Ed having dropped 16 straight sets. Not the same Cal team. Playing a 5-1, not a 6-2. With Grote and Mirkovic on the floor for 6 and 5 1/2 rotations, they were able to extend a LOT of rallies. Other than the three shanks by Bays, I thought her and UW's passing was very good. Of UW's hitters, only Bush had more than 2 hitting errors, and Drechsel and Grote only had one.

Hitting errors are what Cal young hitters (Grote and Taumoepeau) need to learn to cut down by keeping the ball in play. That said, I like Cal's new look (single setter, Mima as the libero, a 6-rotation Grote) and hope Taumoepeau (or Pantovic when she returns) can also play 6 rotations.

I didn't watch a lot of this match, but what I did watch makes me think Cal is not going to go winless this season (unless they just get unlucky).

They aren’t very good and Cals best player wasn’t even playing her natural position….. this isn’t a good look for uw at all. Like I said earlier I like to poke fun at Washington a lot but this is like really bad….

I know you don't like the PAC and I don't give a F about what you like, but they are both top-25 teams in pablo (which I presume you will admit is unbiased).

It’s the conference I follow most closely. I’ve literally seen every relevant game in the conference.

Like I said earlier I like to poke fun at Washington a lot but this is like really bad…. I think Cal will win a match if all their players are healthy for most of the rest of the season. Smoot, who has been their best pin hitter this season, was out in this match. Grote was out earlier in the season (last weekend was the first time she played this season) and Mirkovic was injured (but mostly playing) from all of preseason through the start of the PAC. (She didn't play in some of the first non-conference matches. She looked ok but still somewhat limited in the match vs Stanford and for a few matches after that. ) I don't think they've played a set with all their top players this season. I don't think they're going to be a good team but they'll be better than they have been so far. They should be able to win a match or two if Smoot comes back soon (at close to 100% healthy) and everyone else stays healthy.

I didn't watch a lot of this match, but what I did watch makes me think Cal is not going to go winless this season (unless they just get unlucky). Just as long as it isn't November 14 when they break through (Though watching last night, the Huskies need to pick it up to be sure).

There were some really high level rallies. I watched Cal played Colorado and they looked like a high school team. I think moving Mima to lib is a great decision. It stabilizes their passing. Having Lydia Grote is definitely huge as the announcer mentioned for like a thousand times.
If Cal keeps playing like this, they will shock some teams this season.

Wasn't able to watch this match, but good to hear that Cal's passing was good. Didn't realize that Mirkovic has been playing injured but it explains why she hasn't been the main offensive weapon.
Not really sure I understand why the passing is better with Mirkovic as L though. With Mirkovic as an OH, you have the Libero and just need 1 other OH or DS to help with the passing. With Mirkovic at L, you now need 1 OH AND 1 DS to help with the passing. And regardless of Mirkovic's position, Grote can still play 6 rotations

And regardless of Mirkovic's position, Grote can still play 6 rotations Because it allows her to play 5 and 1/2 rotations vs. 3 rotations at DS. She can't play at OH due to her knee. If you have two good passers, you can hide an OH who isn't.
