Nunge kill 6-6 Holland kill 7-6 IL rotation error 8-6 Yellow card to Tamas; seems fickle by refs I want to say something about the down official. I really hate it when a match becomes more about the officiating and linesmen than the players. Before volleyball instituted replay checks, Penn State had the onerous reputation of referees and linesman constantly favoring PSU. A point here and there that is wrongly given to one team can obviously be crucial in close matches and ultimately in conference standings. I do not know where the down official ccmes from (is he from the East coast where I believe most of the officials were located in early years of B1G PSU volleyball)? At any rate in that first set the down official made 2 very questionable calls (or was it 3) in favor of PSU, and Tamas was not going to allow it to continue. I thought it was unusual that Rose and Tamas did not green card any calls during the match. (Gentleman's agreement? I think to be completely fair and objective.......checking an official's challenged call at the scorers table should not be done by the down official who may have just made the challenged call. The check should be done by a third B1G official who judges the call. Does anyone know if the green-carded calls are checked in the B1G office post game? Tamas is not going to allow his team to be unfairly officiated...as any good coach would not! Coaches like Russ Rose and John Cook know that 'working' the refs is part of the 'game'; the refs are human after all and prone to biases. Smart coaches catch on and do the same.

BTN+ replay is not a great way to gauge violations in service receive. Having said that, I watched and re-watched the serve and receive when we were called for the out of rotation violation. If R2 called the violation on Brown for leaving early I think he was wrong on the call. Even if he was right, he was right by a split second. Regardless of whether he was right or wrong, I cannot recall ever seeing that particular call on a setter in a match at this level. I would love to know what Tamas said to R2 to get the yellow card. Whatever it was the comment was well-earned by the R2 and hopefully solved the larger problem. Thankfully it did not impact the final outcome.
I think coaches prepare reviews of officials and send them to the league office. A friend, generally a very good official, gave a red card to a coach in a B1G match several years ago and never officiated another B1G match. It did not impact his getting officiating jobs at other D1 matches. I always assumed the call, which infuriated an already angry coach, got him removed from some sort of approved B1G officials list.

I remember a few years back people on here were upset with Dan Fischer from Pitt being on the refs, but I always feel a level of respect for coaches that work it (respectfully of course)

Unfortunately the Big Ten has always had, and will always have favored schools within the conference. Look how Ohio St in football and Michigan in basketball were treated with special rules last year that helped them win conference championships. Look at last year's volleyball schedule...no Rutgers for us, but for Nebraska...due to travel distance? A little Illini history lesson. Back in the '80s both the Big Ten (Wayne Duke) and the NCAA (Cedric Dempsey) were run by Iowa grads. We came thisclose to leaving the Big Ten in 1980 over the eligibility of our quarterback, Dave Wilson (a really long story). Things got much better under Commish Jim Delaney, but he retired and was replaced by a Notre Dame grad. So right back to the 1980's.

How does a team hit .327 for the match and lose 1-3? Illinois hit .299. Just like tennis, it's a matter of when winners and errors are made. Total points, higher hitting percentage, higher error to unforced error ratio (in tennis), never tells the whole story.

Graduating 9 seniors & grad transfers will reinvent PSU. Perker, Hord, Hampton, and Blossom are listed as seniors, so I think they can stay for one more year if they want. I'm not sure who is the most valuable, but if any two or more of them leave, those are B1G shoes that need to be filled. Yes, all could stay for a bonus COVID year. But this year, players who would otherwise have been out of eligibility but stayed for their COVID year - Wisconsin, with Rettke, Barnes, Hilley, etc - don't count against the scholarship limit. No such exception (as far as I know) for 2022 and beyond. So Russ will have to manage how to hand out those 'extra' scholarships against whatever incoming freshwomen, or the super-seniors will have to stay on their own dime.

There are only 2 recruits coming in. Who knows with transfers in and out. The VB free agency is a whole nother topic. Most seniors are not staying. Sick of Russ’s schtick.

Watching the match on B1G+, I enjoyed the fan contest between sets where teams of two were judged on who made the best Halloween mummy. One team member wrapped the other in rolls of toilet paper for an allotted amount of time. Would make for a great Halloween party game. Happy Halloween everybody!

How does a team hit .327 for the match and lose 1-3? Illinois hit .299. PSU outhit Illinois in the first set. Illinois outhit PSU in the 2d, 3d and 4th, each won by Illinois.
