Huskers gave away a lot of points from the service line. But they are a high hands team. They were just missing those hands -- a lot -- tonight. Minnesota gets some credit for that.
I also thought it was one of the Gophers' better serving games. And Wenaas was terrific. Defense on both sides was also terrific. That will drive hitting %s down.
All that said, Gophers probably should have swept. I give the Huskers credit for taking it to 5.

People hanging around the match afterwards all talking about the high level of play, tremendous defense and grit from both teams. Then I get home and start going through the Volleytalk pages for the match. Shaking my head. It just wasn’t a high level of play. There certainly was a lot of defense, but that speaks as much to the fact both teams took a lot of low percentage swings where it was very difficult to kill the ball. The number of 5-6 point runs in this match was more indicative of a 15!and under match than a top collegiate match. Just an astounding number of errors, poor setting, bad choices…… just a really weird match.

15U.
Whatever. I have to stop reading these threads. Minnesota fans have become some of the worst on VT.

For the record, when all the players stopped and threw a towel, it was a wasp. There is a wasp that was buzzing all over the yellow wall student section and the Nebraska side all match.

You just need to count the number of unforced errors on both teams' side. I don't think this was a well played game. Nebraska had 36 attack errors, 10 of which were Gopher blocks. So, 26 unforced errors out of 237 total attempts. Minnesota had 26 attack errors, 14 of which were Husker blocks. So, 14 unforced errors out of 197 total attempts. Not sure those are really that high — and, as Spikerthemovie noted, nothing happens in a vacuum. 237 attack attempts is freaking INSANE for a high-level team. Nebraska's prior season high in attack attempts was 168. Since they went to 25 point sets in 2007, they've only exceeded 200 attempts three times - never more than 213. So this is a record --- by a lot. I didn't watch the match, but that would generally be indicative of bad offense on both sides.

Nebraska (and Minnesota too) has the opposite problem that Stanford and Washington do. The Huskers are very good defensively, but their offense is lackluster. After this match, Nebraska has a .230 hitting percentage on the season (Minnesota is hitting .240). Most Final Four teams hit .270 or better.

(Genuinely curious… I’m certainly not a skilled observer of VB, just a long-time one)

Man I wish the public address announcer would stop saying “Rah” at the end of the Rouser. That’s how the rouser used to end (unofficially).

The digging in this match from both teams was some of the best I have seen in years. We can agree to disagree.

John Cook after tonight's match.
“The takeaway message is we played really hard, but they don’t give any medals for playing hard,” Cook said. “You have to find ways to win the games. They played hard tonight, and we have to learn to be tougher and be able to take matches away on the road. Hopefully they’ll have a different mindset going in and trust their training and attack in game five … We’re going to have to just be better in game five and learn how to compete and be better in close games, which we did tonight. We won two deuce games, so that was great. We have to find a way to get a couple points better.”

How painful it would be to be paid to try to make this match sound like it was entertaining. What are y’all on?? it definitely wasn’t either teams best match but that doesn’t mean a 5 setter between two top ten teams is not even entertaining None of them were at the Pav apparently, as it was a very entertaining match in person. Lots long rallies and floor defense all over the place. The comment about technique is telling, as there seems to be a lot of snobbery in this thread. Maybe it's just a Nebraska fan thing.

Hugh McCutcheon after tonight's match.
"What was great about the win was the way we were able to stay in control despite suffering some heartache in the second set," said head coach Hugh McCutcheon. "It was a great environment tonight at the Pav - tons of juice in the building. It's great to come away with this win against a really good Nebraska team."

The spider wasp reaction was tons better in person, as well.
