But it has been so fun to watch Wennas come into her own I love her competitive side and unselfish demeanor. Can’t wait to watch all she accomplishes

15U. Whatever. I have to stop reading these threads. Minnesota fans have become some of the worst on VT. So they're catching up to NE and TX, huh?

Also not going to read all the pages.
Naturally, the Hulu recording cut off at 9-9 in the 5th. Spend 3hrs watching the match for that. Figures. I assumed they lost, given how many set points they forfeited. A team that wants to win, doesn't do that. Period. No matter what.
Was shocked to see they won 15-9. Finally decided they wanted to win for the awesome home crowd, at the very end. They got their money's worth last night!
Regardless of internet people with zero information claiming this and that about Landfair .... who cares??? Crazy that Miyabe only got to play this year. She is very talented, in her own right, and I hope she starts every match the rest of the year!

It just wasn’t a high level of play. There certainly was a lot of defense, but that speaks as much to the fact both teams took a lot of low percentage swings where it was very difficult to kill the ball. The number of 5-6 point runs in this match was more indicative of a 15!and under match than a top collegiate match. Just an astounding number of errors, poor setting, bad choices…… just a really weird match. If you read your comments from the match, I am not sure how you wouldn't feel a bit embarrassed. The digging in this match from both teams was some of the best I have seen in years. We can agree to disagree. [br I am expressing an opinion as to the number of digs. Certainly there was some good defense played but late in the match the play-by-play announcer asked Audrey directly what she thought led to the high number of digs of which she said that the ball handling and setting was leaving attackers in difficult positions thus making it easier to make plays. Clearly I’m not alone in that opinion but that doesn’t mean I’ll right Or that another person isn’t entitled to a different opinion

For the record, when all the players stopped and threw a towel, it was a wasp. There is a wasp that was buzzing all over the yellow wall student section and the Nebraska side all match. Thank you. Madi had an animated reaction and Nicklin took care of business. A good moment in a very good match between two top teams.

Wow. I had to miss the match completely tonight as I was out and about. I NEVER thought MN could do this. I definitely thought they could win a set or possibly two sets. But to win - a nice surprise after celebrating Halloween out. What's the narrative of the match?? The narrative of this match is that Nebraska lost because they let Lexi play... Not really. But it's Halloween and I wanted to see if that will keep this thread going for another 48 pages. Actually, despite all the whining, it actually was a terrific defensive struggle between both teams. There was a pretty high error rate on both sides for servers and hitting, but in my view it was mostly because they both felt the pressure of not getting automatic kills like they usually do against less talented teams. In cases like this even the best hitters get tired of having their bombs keep coming back, so they try higher hands or extreme angles and the balls go flying when they miss. The most entertaining part was when Nebraska won game two after being down 24-18. Think about that for a moment. But that spectacular comeback didn't make Minnesota crumble. They just played tough and gutted it out in five. (And the second most entertaining part was Minnesota winning the 5th 15-9 after being tied 9-9.) Hats off to both teams. A great defensive match, despite the whining. Great points. One correction it was 24-20 in set 2, when Nebraska reeled off 4 straight points and fought off 7 set points. Was very frustrating as a Gopher fan, but people saying the Gophers choked, aren't giving credit to Nebraska's defense and Hames tough serves to get back to 24-24.

While I wish MN had a more effective middle attack, I would call 23 kills on 55 middle attacks by NU as a "substantial majority." I assume you meant "would not." 23 kills plus 8 HE = 31 = substantial majority Right, I would not call 23 kills on 55 attempts substantial. I didn't know that you were counting hitting errors as part of immediate points.

The Gophers .168 hitting percentage was the 3rd lowest this season for a winning team in a top 25 matchup.
San Diego hit .146 in their 3-2 win over UCLA on 9/9 and UCLA hit .161 in their 3-2 win over Stanford on 9/26 for the lowest.

15U. Whatever. I have to stop reading these threads. Minnesota fans have become some of the worst on VT. As a Badger fan, I’m here for it. Watched the match last night hoping to get some potential separation from Nebraska, but also hoping to see Minnesota lose in the most cringeworthy way possible. Oh well, a 5 set match was fun to watch as an opposing fan.

Was at the match and few takeaways:
MN did a great job from the service line. They were +4 in the aces/errors ratio, and the pressure in general made it more difficult to run the middles. Had they been able to more consistently get the ball to Caffey and Stivrins, I don't expect MN would have come out on top. NE was -7 in that ratio, btw. (I'll add that I too feel like Samedy's serve "looks" like a total free ball. But teams struggle with it at times?? Whatever works).
Hitting % in great part to the scrappy defense. As another poster already alluded, the more your hits get dug up, the ever so slightly you're more prone to go for more...hit higher hands, try to carve a sharper angle, really find that corner, hit harder in general. No magic there. Defense will do that.
Shaffmaster continues to improve. Aside from her excellent defense and serving, she's setting faster and more accurately in transition, jumping more on her sets in transition (actually holding the block a bit imagine that), taking her offensive opportunities, and getting hittable balls to the middle more regularly. This last part is important, in regard to the fact that you can lead a hitter to water, but if that hitter then just taps her hand at it so softly it barely makes a splash...not gonna get the results you were hoping for. Rubright in particular doesn't even look like she knows how to hit from the middle. Great sets are tipped 90% of the time to her. A few go down. The way our pins can terminate, that's where the offense will reamain.
Which leads me to Landfair. I was pleased to see that she actually warmed up in hitting lines last night (at least I'm pretty sure I saw that arriving at the tail end of warm ups--correct me if I'm wrong). Suggests to me that whatever ailment she has, it's improving. GOD BLESS Miyabe for her outstanding play off the bench over the last month. I enjoy her and I'm thrilled she stayed. But the Gophers are, in my mind, unquestionably a better team when Landfair and Wenaas as our starting outsides. This was most glaring to me last night in the blocking on the left. Stuffs don't tell the whole story. Setting the block for your middle and for your defense to line up around is huge. CC struggled digging the slide for what I expect was in no small part that reason (when Miyabe was front row). Landfair also is better with ball control and more terminal when healthy. Makes me excited for the post season if Taylor is firing on cylinders well before that point.
The last thing I'll say is that while I concede I've never heard or seen John Cook behave in a scenario outside of his role as a volleyball coach, the only thought I'm left with whenever I see him in interviews is that he is a petulant, awful human being.

Coach has been on a steady three and a half year campaign to get her to play within the Nebraska system. She is a dynamic free spirit. I think he's earned the right to be a little frustrated and he's been pretty good about holding his tongue.
