I had a premonition about how the first set of Thursday’s match will unfold. Only Brooke Nuneviller and Taylor Borup come out onto the court for Oregon. Nuneviller informs the up ref Oregon will be using two players. After consulting his rule book the ref approves.
Tufuga sets Bertie (OH). Bertie tips the ball directly to Nuneviller. Nuneviller and Borup are positioned in the back row playing floor defense. Nuneviller easily digs the ball, gets the set, and pounds the ball to the floor for a point. Tufuga sets Bertie again who tips again with the same result. Tufuga tries Bertie one more time with the same result.
Oregon 3; Stanford 0
Hambly calls time out. Hambly is heard talking to Bertie:
Hambly: Natalie, there is no block. Why are you tipping.
Bertie: The sets weren’t exactly where I want them and I was worried someone might run up and block my shot.
Hambly: It would be helpful if you tried hitting the ball hard.
Points are traded back and forth. Media timeout. Oregon 15; Stanford 9
During the timeout Holly McPeak goes over to Brooke Nuneviller to interview her:
McPeak: Brooke, what do you think of this Stanford team.
Nuneviller: It’s good I’m not playing with these bunch of losers.
McPeak: How do you think Stanford will do in the NCAA tournament.
Nuneviller: I doubt they will make the tournament.
McPeak: Thank you Brooke.
More points are traded back and forth. Then suddenly as if Stanford didn’t face enough adversity Campbell gets injured. L. Smith and A. Smith are still unavailable. Hambly is heard calling up Maggie Mendelson.
Hambly: Hi Maggie, can you reclassify yourself to 2021 and fly into San Jose immediately. Someone will pick you up and bring up to Maples Pavilion to play in a match.
Mendelson: Hook ’em Horns.
Hambly hangs up and subs Beaven in for Campbell to play MB.
Final score: Oregon 25; Stanford 16
Holly McPeak goes into the Oregon locker room to interview coach Matt Ulmer.
McPeak: Matt, why did you only use two players?
Ulmer: I didn’t want to dominate Stanford on its home court.
McPeak: That was nice.
Ulmer: Yes, I’m the nice coach. Jim Moore was the mean coach.
McPeak: How do you think Stanford will do the balance of the season.
Ulmer: It’s tough having only one player Olgivie who can pass. I think they could win one more conference match.
McPeak: Thanks Matt.
