Anybody catch any of the spring scrimmages. Thoughts? Roster for Fall: OH: Hadrych-GR, Tabron-SR, Campbell-JR, Meller-RS SO, Jordan-FR OPP: Burilovic-FR, Dwinell-FR S: Simpson-JR, Finley-RS SO MB: Howard-GR, Kuehl-RS SR, Simkus-JR, Payne-FR L/DS: Riddle-SR, Torstenson-JR, Stepaniuk-JR, DeSensi-RS SO, Bolles-FR Going to be interesting who gets the OPP spot, whether it be a freshman or an established OH; Libero also up for grabs. OH and MB seem obvious for starters, and got to think that Simpson has the edge over Finley for starting setter, since she set a lot last season. We will see. Payne is a really impressive recruit. Wouldn’t surprise me if she doesn’t get quality time this season

But I do think Payne and Jordan will see the court for CU unless they decide to red shirt. Also, Jesse does not start a true freshman often. Only one I can think of was Deluzio and that was because Simpson transferred out. Right now CU needs a Libero because no one on this current roster is top half of pac 12 quality. If they land a libero they should be better than last year. Katie really stepped up in her senior year last year.

OH and MB seem obvious for starters, and got to think that Simpson has the edge over Finley for starting setter, since she set a lot last season. We will see. Yes, I went to two of the scrimmages. My thoughts are that they WILL be better than last year IF they can ensure the back row defense is at least decent to good. If not, we all know that you can't win a lot of points if you can't get some decent balls up and to a good spot for your setter. It could be painful if they don't figure it out. CU is going overseas this summer, so that will give them even more time to gel and connect, and gain more experience. MY OBSERVATIONS & THOUGHTS (with PLUS, EVEN, or MINUS compared to last year's NCAA Tourney/20-win season): OH: (PLUS)... Returning last years staters, Hadrych and Tabron, on top of other good OH's compared to last year (a couple were injured last year) is already ahead of the game. Jordan has all the feels of an elite PAC12 level OH, but needs a little work on passing and hitting a bit harder. She seems very anxious to get better and be better -- more than a lot of players I see. I see a lot of potential for her. The other OH's show promise, but I don't see anyone taking a starter spot from Hadrych. She got better and better as the season went on and could end her college career with a number of accolades next season. Tabron could lose it, but doubtful -- unless someone else shows more consistency all-around by late August. There are definitely a number of options from the OH's that can move to OPP. CU has been testing a lot of OH players at OPP to see how they all do. OPP: (PLUS).... A lot of good options here. Parker never returned to her Freshman year glory with her injuries, and the new recruits will likely be better. Schneggenburger did okay, but that wasn't her forte. She likes playing OH and hopefully does well for Utah State next year. S: (PLUS).... Simpson will remain at setter and is better than Finley. Simpson is even more confident on the court and has established a lot of connections already. Good hands. Still needs a little work on the back sets. Everything else is elite level. I did notice that Finley has been improving though and is a good setter. There is still a possibility of a 6-2 with Finley if CU wants. She is good enough. MB: (EVEN).... Losing Hart is tough, but I think CU will get Howard in place for what they need. Howard is great at blocking (probably better than Hart). She is definitely more inconsistent at hitting, but can hit a very hard ball and I like that she is fearless. Once she raises her IQ on offense, she could be an even better asset than Hart. Kuehl has been looking more athletic and moving more than before -- even at 6'7". From what I have seen of Payne, she is also very good and could definitely see playing time if someone gets injured or if she is just overwhelmingly better by August. Simkus is looking better each year too, and is a very solid back-up. L/DS: (MINUS).... Definitely have not seen anything at the level of Lougeay and DeLuzio from last year. Not yet. The DS/L girls definitely show snippets of really good plays and defense, but not consistently. They need confidence and good defensive coaching to own that back court. NOTES: Serving seems to be getting better for some players -- which is needed. CU needs to match the serving pressure that Top 25 teams regularly have in order for them to return to the Top 25 and stay there (CU has been Top 25 ranked at least one week every season for the last 6+ seasons).

Good notes. Thanks. Agreed with the OH and MB spots. Makes sense about Simpson. The OPP and Libero spots are really the spots to figure out it seems. I've heard the freshman Bolles (OH/DS) is pretty good. Maybe she will win the libero spot; otherwise hope one of the other established players step up.

How are we feeling about their schedule?

How are we feeling about their schedule? You can't tell really well, but Kansas is added to that Wichita State Tourney, so that is a good add. It's kind of ridiculous that the Wichita State tournament is not finalized by now. They are trying to finalize a 4th team and they are usually good at getting good teams to come, BUT it's pretty late now to add anyone good. The schedule is not the strongest. I think the non-conference schedule has just 3 teams that made the NCAA Tourney last year (Kansas, UNLV, and UNC). A couple of those teams could be on a down year this year. Wichita State had a good RPI last year, but didn't make the tourney. This non-conference will not help CU's RPI too much. They will likely need to go undefeated (maybe 1 loss) to stay particularly relevant. The team is promising this year too. Maybe they will have to prove it during conference, but some folks will most likely not jump on any kudos for CU until solid conference wins.

Meanwhile, the Buffs just won their first match in their European summer tour in Budapest -- beating one of the younger National Hungarian teams.

Looks like all DSs are getting libero playing time, but likely going to Riddle or Torstenson based on how much they are in the spot.

Looks like all DSs are getting libero playing time, but likely going to Riddle or Torstenson based on how much they are in the spot. This is going to be a problem for CU this year. Hopefully someone can step up but both of them looked timid anytime they have been put in in the past. Timid libero is the last thing a team needs.

The Buffs ended their Europe tour with an undefeated 5-0 record in Croatia before visiting Italy and heading home.
