It pretty publicly happened with Madi Endsley, right? Although that was all pre-enrollment. You can go all the way back to Danielle Minch. And I seem to recall some other athletes purportedly on 2/2's who didn't make it to their scholarship years (Tiani Reeves, wasn't the Brazilian supposedly on a 2x2? f.ex.) for whatever reasons. Nebraska seems to be pretty upfront about being cutthroat like this (at least the program if not the fans) IMO There's not any real dirt here. Tiani Reeves was on the bench for the 2015 championship and the following year. She then decided to concentrate on being on the Nebraska track team and left volleyball. Everything I've read, she has glowing praise for the volleyball team and coaches. Danielle Minch was wanted by Nebraska. She delayed. When she was ready to sign, the slots were taken. She signed at Colorado State. Were some around her disappointed? Yes. Coach Cook and his people have a history of being open and upfront.

Reeves was on a 2+2, did her two non-schollie years, and then when it was time for her to go on VB scholarship, she was moved on. Did she ever even compete for the track team? Akana also has glowing praise for the volleyball team. Minch - that's a flat out lie. She signed an NLI with Nebraska - here's the article - huskers.com/news/2006/11/9/682675.aspx. Cook pushed her out (IIRC it was to make room for Houghtelling's last year) (Oh, add McClinton to the list - there's another one).

Perfect sense if you follow both volleyball programs. Enlighten me. Did Texas give her money? A scholarship opened up when Texas DS/Libero, Nalani Iosia entered her name into the transfer portal in late April. Apparently, Nebraska didn't have a scholarship for Akana for 2022-23; Texas did.

Do I recall correctly that the COVID year rules included 'extra' scholarships for 2021 that are not available for 2022? IIRC, schools that players in fall sports on scholarship the for 2020 (spring 2021) season who would otherwise have exhausted their eligibility but then came back to play in 2021 did not count against the 12 scholarship limit. That is, Nebraska and Wisconsin and whoever else had more than 12 scholarships available for 2021 but have to get back down to 12 for 2022. A headache for all coaches, and likely meaning that Akana isn't the only player who was on scholarship for 2021 who then found none available for 2022 (if that is what happened). Is this specific to volleyball or does football have a different set of rules? I thought for the next few years, anyone enrolled at school during the 2020-2021 school year would be eligible for an extra year, and they wouldn’t count against the scholarship limit of 85 for football. Did I hear that wrong for football?

Did I hear that wrong for football? it’s my understanding that all the sports are the same. They can still have the extra year but last year was the only year schools could go over scholarship limit. They have to be under the limit for the 22-23 school year.

Did I hear that wrong for football? Yes, but that's ok, because not all of the coaches completely understand what is going on. How can laypersons be expected to keep up? For those of you who were tired of Dana Rettke after 5 years - heard this from a compliance person the other day - In spring sports with 2 exemptions, a player with a medical redshirt could play in (part of) 7 different seasons. They could theoretically get a bachelors and law school or PT school completed on their athletic scholarship.
