All really good assessments of the NAIA field for this year. I think we will see a lot of movement in the top 15 overall. It will be interesting with St X, Campbellsville and Georgetown heading out west for some matches. Menlo will in the top 10 for sure, but will be interesting to see how they do after a year off from competition. Lourdes will be good but have a small roster. Any injuries could really set them back. Indy Tech could make a push for top in that conference but I don't see any major upgrades to the roster to make a national push. Campbellsville lost some major contributors in almost every position. Will be interesting to see how their replacements do. St X will be the top in that conference with no real challenger. Georgetown looks like it added some depth in all areas and height. Will be interesting to see if they can overtake Campbellsville and take a step nationally while in Cali. I see Vanguard and BenU starting the year at the tops and being there most of the year unless something drastic happens. Vanguard, BenU, Park, Grand View, and Menlo are my top 5 right now.

If you are connected to an NAIA program please encourage them to share their program news with Middle Hitter. I sent out my annual reminder email today to the head coaches and SID's with instructions on simple ways to do so. Happy Holidays!

First poll out in about a week and it looks like a few NAIA’s kick off their season this week. Hard to believe but we are here!

Looks like Lawrence Tech is now climbing an even steeper hill. Leaving days before the season is rough.

Indiana Tech had a couple of nice wins against NCAA teams to kick off the season.
Unfortunately, Vanguard canceled its Saturday match with St. Xavier due to COVID protocols. St. Xavier will open its season at St. Katherine Sunday.

Looks like Saint Xavier/Vanguard was canceled. I’d imagine COVID-related. That pushes Vanguard’s start back over a week and makes me wonder if the rest of SXU’s California trip is happening. Any other NAIA’s going early? I saw IN Tech is off to a solid start but haven’t seen any others.

Goshen played tonight. Easy sweep of Hiram College. I know nothing about Hiram but Goshen rolled.

St. Xavier played their match against Saint Katherine today, so I would imagine their remaining CA matches (Concordia, UCSB, and CSUN) will happen as well. It looks like Vanguard was the one who cancelled. Their match scheduled with Springfield next weekend also shows as cancelled on their schedule. That puts Springfield's match that same day (1/15) with Hope in doubt. Surprising if they make the trip for just one match. UC Merced was also supposed to play a match at UC Santa Cruz yesterday, but it appears Merced cancelled. Their website says they have suspended all athletics for the time being. Merced is supposed to host Santa Cruz a couple weeks from now and then go to Menlo's tournament. Have to keep an eye on whether that happens. The Menlo tournament still seems to be on, but you wonder whether they will be without Merced, and whether Campbellsville makes the trip out to California. They also have a match scheduled at The Master's U on the eve of the Menlo event. Speaking of Santa Cruz, the Slug Slam is scheduled for next weekend (Jan 14/15). I heard today that Santa Cruz has already announced no spectators will be allowed. I also heard that might not be all. Apparently they will evaluate this week whether the tournament will happen at all, considering they have a couple East Coast D3 teams (Stevenson and New Paltz) scheduled to appear. Westcliff and Menlo are the NAIA teams that were invited to that tournament. So lots of moving parts right now. We'll see how many of the matches scheduled for the next two weeks actually happen, particularly the two NorCal tournaments.

I don't think there are really any surprises here in the pre-season poll. What will be interesting as the season gets started to see if Park can overtake GV. There is plenty of chatter about what GV has lost, and while that is a lot, they are still a solid team. It will be interesting to see how they play under a new HC. Are they better then Park? I could see Park being on top in that conference.
I am really interested in seeing the top 15 poll that will come out tomorrow. How do the raters view Menlo? Will GV still be #1? Any surprise teams inside the top 15?
