I think it’s time we believe in the William Penn hype. Early upsets, what seems like a wild hole environment, the Heart may be more interesting than anticipated.

Poster Cranium made a nice call with this comment a month ago: - The only thing I'd change about the breakdown above, besides maybe moving Campbellsville down, is William Penn. The Lewis xfer, Krause will add a lot to what was already a good couple players - I wouldn't be surprised to see WPU climb up the Heart, somewhere around Missouri Valley.
The Statesmen made a nice statement last night by knocking off Mo Bap. Krause is quite the addition to the roster.

I don’t know that they’re a Heart contender at this point, BUT nobody in that league has looked dominant to me at this point - Grand View included. Honestly, I see an upper tier of almost 7 teams right now. That can for sure shift as people start playing each other and we see how good teams really are. I do think Grand View is up there - I think Menlo is better and deeper, beyond them I think Park, Vanguard, Indiana Tech, Jamestown, and probably Lourdes are all talented and playing well. I also think there’s a growing list of teams 8-20 that is significantly tougher than even last season’s 8-20; teams like William Penn, Georgetown, Aquinas, MoBap, MoVal, St. Xavier, etc. I love how this level is exploding!

William Penn making some noise in the Heart! Great call on them, and they will have a good matchup against Park this week to keep the hype train going. Looks like the campus is bought in as well, so the home game should be a big advantage. I agree with you on Grand View, they don't look dominant. They are very good, but beatable. If I were to put teams into tiers right now, I think I would look at it like this (in no particular order): Tier 1Grand View Menlo Vanguard Park Lourdes Tier 2BenU Indiana Tech Jamestown Tier 3Georgetown Mo Val Ottawa (AZ) UC Merced William Penn Campbellsville Saint Xavier Mo Bap

I think both of those tiers/groupings are accurate. In reality, we have so much volleyball left and a lot of these groups will sort themselves out. Looking at Massey Ratings - they rate all levels together - I think they’re groups and ranks are pretty accurate BASED ON WHAT WE’VE SEEN:
NAIA only teams in Massey Ratings with multiple matches played (which account for home/away, SOS, sets played, etc)
1) Grand View 2) Menlo 3) Park 4) Indiana Tech 5) Vanguard 6) William Penn 7) Ottawa AZ 8) The Masters 9) Missouri Valley 10) Saint Xavier
That top 5 (GV through Vanguard) are all rated in the top-40 across all divisions.

Stephen Menzel is an exceptional libero for Missouri Baptist. He has cystic fibrosis and is still one of the best liberos in the country

This week is going to give us some answers, with quite a few really good teams playing each other. I think it will let us know if the elite are truly elite, and if some of these bubble teams can get it done. Kudos to Georgetown for making the trip out West and Ottawa-AZ for heading to the Midwest!
Big ones this week include: 2/1 – (4) Park at (RV) William Penn 2/3 – (10) Georgetown at (RV) Master’s 2/4 – (12) Ottawa-AZ at (8) Missouri Valley 2/4 – (14) Saint Xavier at (5) Lourdes 2/4 – (12) Ottawa-AZ at (4) Park 2/4 – (10) Georgetown at (3) Vanguard 2/5 – (15) UC Merced at (RV) Master’s

Talk about picking the right horse. William Penn does it again! #4 Park downed on the road at William Penn! #5 Lourdes swept at HOME by Siena Heights…
Grand View and Indiana Tech both took care of business as the only top teams to survive the night.
Georgetown and MoBap also swept to round out the ranked teams.

The two outsides and the libero are big time ballers.

I am a believer in William Penn after finally being able to watch them play last night. They could win the Heart with their level of play right now and the confidence they have.
Another team to keep an eye on...Georgetown. Big West Coast trip for them coming up, and I think they end up beating Master's and upsetting Vanguard.

Vanguard is still playing at a very high level, even without Anema. And Master's is a vastly improved team this year. They have some very talented newcomers who are going to make them a threat to the top teams in the GSAC. You may be right about Georgetown, but they're going to have to be very good to beat either of those teams, let alone both. Master's also has a match this weekend with UC Merced that is going to be very exciting. Things are heating up fast. I can't wait for the conference seasons to get underway.

What's life without some boldness? I am loving the quality all over the NAIA this season. Last year it was just boring, knowing Grand View was just so much better than everyone. This year, it could be a number of teams, and whoever heats up at the right time could take it. I agree, Vanguard is still playing at a very high level, and I think this is going to be a really quality match.

The Masters reverse sweeps Georgetown, for its second defeat of a top 10 program in a week.
