It's not often when the opposing setter gets pretty significantly better attacking stats than Powell.

Welp, maybe some anxiety for Huskie fans, but a win is a win.

OSU doing a good job distributing their attacks to both sides of the net. I should add that they were distributing those attacks, but not necessarily distributing the kills. Vernon got set a lot, but didn't convert many of those to kills. However, that still opens up the defense a little. Prevents them from totally camping on Tkachenko.

Back from the match. I like this Beavers team -- it has some real spunk and energy. The freshman setter is still learning her craft but she is pretty fearless, not afraid to distribute all over the court, and has super positive energy. Tkachenko really reads the block nicely, has some serious power, and is going to be a force in the conference for years to come. Mark Barnard is doing some good things in Corvallis.
What did we learn tonight about the Huskies? In my opinion, we learned that Shannon Crenshaw should be our OH2 for the remainder of the regular season and the tournament. This assumes, of course, that Hoffman will be seeing front row duty on Sunday and beyond. While the sample size is still small and the competition has not been elite, Shannon's stats are superior and she looks the part of a dangerous front row attacker. I think Emoni Bush is going to be a real force in the coming years and she looked good tonight, producing kills late in the first set when the Huskies were on the ropes. But Crenshaw simply plays cleaner and has more tools. She really hasn't looked bad in any set that we've seen her play front row this year. If she gets in a funk at some point, then Cook has the option of inserting Bush. A luxury, you might say.
Let's hope that Hoffman is 100% healthy soon, preferably Sunday. That said, her service did some real damage tonight.
The most concerning thing tonight was the lack of clean play in the first couple sets. The Huskies couldn't seem to string together three, four, five points in a row without committing unnecessary errors. It's a little late in the season for that sort of thing. You also shouldn't be allowing OSU to hit over .300 in a set (set #2). Part of this, IMO, is the Huskies' tendency to play looser against a team that scrambles on D and sends a fair number of balls over the net that are a little unexpected.
The second most concerning thing was the poor connection between EMP and her middles. It wasn't that the middles were not getting attempts -- 30 attempts through three sets is not too bad. But too often it seemed like the location and/or timing of the sets was off, particularly on the slide. Grote should not be hitting .214 and Sanders .071. Something to work on in practice and improve before the tournament.
The Huskies have a good chance to win out and at least share the Pac 12 title. They will need to play better than we saw tonight to do that.

Not exactly the match I was expecting, Oregon State gave the Huskies a struggle initially, but UW steadily got better through the match. Crenshaw had a very good night all around and it was nice to see her hitting again. She definitely has earned consideration for the OH2 slot going forward, still understanding that she was not hitting against the kind of blockst that Oregon or Washington State will put up.
The connections between Powell and the middles was mostly a struggle, as both were often reaching for contact with limited options.
UW's serves looked very tough and limited OSU a lot.
(Of course after I posted, I got to read Always' post, who covered all my points better.)

Crenshaw has been one of my favorites for a long time, and she's having a fine night. But ... she is hitting over the top of a 5-5 setter. Just a reminder here. She's listed at 5' 7". But, yeah, they're probably going to try to put their OPP on the other hitter - unless she keeps having nights like tonight.

OSU accounted for themselves well tonight, but WA refused to budge and did well at the end of the sets to take them with strong hitting. Crenshaw played great. OSU has a lot of potential. With 15 freshmen (7 true and 8 covid) and some strong players, they will continue to improve. Vernon has just come back after being injured, and she wasn't that effective tonight, but she was pretty strong last year. When they have her, Tkachenko, and McDonald back from injury all injury free at the same time next year, plus a couple of incoming hitters, and their dynamic setter, hopefully they can return to their form from years past.

And UW may have been looking a bit past the Beavs to the Ducks on Sunday. It is not unusual for so-called "also-rans" to come into Hec-Ed and play out of their minds. Beating us will make their season.

Back from the match.
Bays continues to up her serving game. Boy does she move that ball around.
Hoffman continues to do what you need her to do. Three aces tonight, including key moment in set one. Now third in conference in aces per set.
Crenshaw started swinging with abandon about halfway through match. Love her but jury still out on OH. Oregon match will be telling but Shannon has proved her worth again and again over the years.

Oregon State has been down and downer - but there have been some flashes of great play.
In Corvallis last month, they took a set off of Utah and kept the match very close for three sets before Utah ran away in the 4th.
Despite getting swept, Friday night at UW might have been their high-water mark so far.

I don't know much about him but the interview I saw on the OS coach I really liked and he has a great resume If OS can get a few big transfers or some international players they move to the middle of the pac the same as ASU has or higher with his coaching.
