Title IX has had an enormous negative effect on NCAA Men's Volleyball. It's the single biggest hurdle out there today. Look at the Big 10. They have massive fan bases and wonderful facilities and they can't field teams because of Title IX. Title IX isn't the only reason, but it's the biggest. It's a real shame. College Football rosters RUIN opportunities for mens sports. Sure, Title 9 presents obstacles- but if such a large portion of mens scholarships weren't hoarded by Football there would be more opportunities for sports like Men's Volleyball, Lacrosse, and even men's soccer. However, Football and MEN'S basketball are the driving force behind much of the NCAA funding for these athletic departments so its doubtful that anything will change. Unless, there's an amendment to title 9 (not in this day and age) or concussion litigation starts to infect football... The NCAA does not give 2 sh*ts about mens volleyball- they won't even support it on their social media. I see BAGS and Spike Ball getting more airtime than D1 Men's Volleyball.

It really is sad... NCAAVolleyball Twitter handle is embarrassing for volleyball as a sport. To stop reporting on men's sport feels so unnecessary and almost spiteful. Also the fact that 80 or so scholarships go to football teams just basically kills any chance for other men's sports. Also ESPN pushing quasisports like bags and spikeball and not volleyball does not help. Just sad all around... However, I think we need to keep supporting First Point Volleyball and see if we can get more college teams making programs. I know they are not all huge names but at least there are more opportunities for young men to play the game on a high level in college.

I wish there could be an Title IX exception for football. You can't blame football for all the scholarships, they pay all the bills. They generate all the revenue to athletic departments so all the non-revenue generating sports can exist. It is what it is. But Title IX punishes men's sports. That was not the intent. It was designed to level the playing field, not harm it.

I think Title IX is the culprit, due to football, for the most part. If Big State U in the midwest had a team, with its built in fan base, people would probably go. I will say that, from the limited amount of men's college volleyball I have seen, it also does suffer a bit because they are so darned good that it is hard to defend effectively at all.

The culprit is that fact that there are very few high school boy's volleyball teams.

I think a big part of the issue is that basketball and volleyball compete for a lot of the same athletes, and there's just so much more money to be made in men's basketball than men's volleyball. On the women's side, the financial calculus is a lot closer, so many choose volleyball.

Most high schools have women’s volleyball, and every state except 3 has a D1 women’s team. Men’s volleyball is virtually nonexistent outside of a handful of states. D1 Men’s volleyball is almost always in the red, so colleges aren’t motivated to add/support programs, especially when there’s no base of fans to tap into.
