The replay at 7-6 in the 5th was whether Dev Robinson touched the net with her elbow or her hair - it was her hair, not a violation. What the refs missed on that one was that Robinson's foot came down entirely across the centerline. I think that meant the point should have gone to Louisville, but I'm certainly not an expert on the rules, whether it needs to "affect play", or whether that can be reviewed, etc etc. Gotcha. I got the sets of those plays mixed up. As for the net and under... the R2 called net, the challenge was on that ruling. The under was not called and to my knowledge cannot be reviewed because that was not the rule that was called. However, being under in NCAA you have to impact a players ability on the other side. This under did not and was probably why that part wasn't called. I thought the refs got this call reversal correct. During the regular season, it was my understanding that 'the entire play' could be reviewed. But for tournament, the officials went back to the old "three challenges, win or lose" challenge rules, so whether "entire play" review was in effect last night or not, I don't know.

The overhead view, clearly showed it was above the plane. Bad call and WAY too close to call at that point. I must have missed the overhead view... from what I could tell it was hard to judge if the ball had even crossed... and the players hand being completely over the net??? That was an easy call to make. The fact that you didn't even see the definitive replay, tells me it was not an easy call at all and making such a marginal call was a poor choice. As was said, it didn't end up mattering thankfully.

If a shoelace touches the center line in Wisconsin they call you for it. I love it, as I said earlier, far too many injuries happen when people land over the line. It is there for a reason, you get called if you turn and your elbow brushes the net, you get called if the ball flies 10' over the pin, you should always get called if you touch the center line. If they're calling it that way in Wisconsin, then they're incorrectly applying the rules as written. Feel free to approach all of the governing bodies of the sport (FIVB, USAV, NCAA, NFHS) to try to get them to change the rules since none of them have the rule you want. You are correct, it is always better for players to come down on another's foot and sprain their ankle, tear their ligaments, pop ACLs. It is called here

So you saw it one way, I saw the other, nothing "irrefutable", so 'call on the field stands", which is what happened.

Having coached club for 20+ years, always practice hitting overpasses from tosses. Always try to toss a few short of the net so players have to learn to let them go (or at least use a blocking move) because the ball won’t get into the plane. Basic stuff. Pretty sure Louisville player knew this rule but she made a early (bad) swing. Kinda like hitting out. ☹️ Anyway Louisville won that set so correct call (player error) did not hurt them. In fact, they took a 3-1 lead in set 5 and forced a TO. 😳 After that, not so much.

Try to get them to recognize the ball coming over or not over the net. And from different spots on the court and different heights and speed. It's not something that's easy to learn for some kids though.

The result of the play made it 23-23 in the 4th set, instead of Louisville ahead 24-22. Louisville won the set 25-23. I could have sworn this was in set 5? Going from Louisville being up 7-6 to down 8-6 in a matter of plays. That was the hair in the net call.

There's no difference in what is challenged in the experimental rule. In/out/touch/net contact are bundled. The only things that were different under the experimental rule was that you started with two challenges and you kept your challenge if the call was reversed. Not all conferences used the experimental rule (non-conference games weren't supposed to use it). I worked a DII conference where the coaches voted unanimously to use the experimental rule and someone in the conference office failed to send in the paperwork to the NCAA for approval to use it. The coaches weren't very happy.

The fact that this much attention was given to the refs calls this match says it all. Just poor officiating all around. Wrong, I thought Patti did a great job and was the perfect R1 for that intense and fun of a match last night. The only people that should be upset is Louisville that they started leaving slides wide open and their offense just fell apart and they started making pressure errors that an undefeated team shouldn't be making. I think this shows the pressure cooker that is the Big Ten schedule and how it can relate to post season play. Can't wait for this final, hoping to see Wisconsin finally pull through.

I think Stevenson contacted the ball at the very earliest possible point in time that it was legal for her to. That is the smallest amount I have ever seen a ball be in the plane when contacted, in my completely unscientific opinion of seeing a replay. That being said, when I saw it in real time, I was jumping and screaming she was over, that's our point, and I thought we were about to close out the set. Ultimately, given it looked a lot more like she was over in real time, and on replay I still can't say if she was not, I can't blame the up ref for calling it, and I also can't Louisville for passionately disagreeing.

Okay, we just watched the match on ESPN. Thoughts, in no particular order:
- Rettke bear-hugging Smrek at the end and screaming, “I’M SO PROUD OF YOU!” Oh, my heart. We missed the final celebration and everything that went on in the arena after the final whistle because at the first match point, Rainbowtoddler yelled, “I HAVE TO PEE!” We both yelled, “Hold it, Buddy!” So we had to book it out of there to get to the bathroom right away after the win. Apologies to the people sitting next to us.
- Louisville is GOOD. Holy god. I’ve been following volleyball since 2006 and that’s the best game I’ve ever seen.
- I completely agree with Sunderland’s comment that someone was going to win this match, but no one was gonna lose it.
- You might say this is because I’m a Wisco homer, but Pati Rolf did an excellent job officiating and I’m very glad she was R1 for this match. She’s literally one of the top officials in the world and the video replays, which we did not get in the arena, pretty much confirmed every one of her calls. As for the non-calls, she called the match consistently and evenly, which is all one can ask.
- Loberg is stepping UP. I’m very proud of her.
- Barnes. Run through a wall.
- I love all these ladies.
- Again, Louisville. Such amazing work.
Let’s go.

It is called here I never once said it was better for players to get injured. I just pointed out that touching the center line is legal according to all of the rule sets. I don't know what level it's being called incorrectly at in Wisconsin (when I watch videos of HS volleyball from Wisconsin, the center line is being called according to the rulesk), but I would think any coach who had read the rule book would throw a fit.

Very well said 👏 MICRO win but HUGE win under great pressure from Louisville especially after losing set 4 with 2 quick points after the 23 all tie and then going down 1-3 😳 great early TO by HC Sheff 👍 may just be Badgers year 🦡
