Why doesn’t the Big Ten get involved? Shouldn’t there be an investigation from a outside firm into the abuse and financials?

I find some of the statements about what was said in meeting with players difficult to believe. Maybe this doesn’t happen for some, but usually as a male coach I have an assistant coach with me, and if it’s a female assistant, even better. Because then you end up with a lot of these “she said, he denies” statements. And do Vansant and Gwitt, and other assistants, trainers, etc. have a responsibility here to speak out publicly, either through IDS or some other outlet, and stop the mental abuse of current and future players? Their silence and lack of responding just allows more of this to continue. If you really care about these players, speak up now, attach your name to it, and get this stopped.

Funny you should mention that. There's a rumor out there about a coach fired her assistant because the assistant did just that. Went through all the proper channels. The administration didn't respond by suspending the head coach. They fired the assistant at the end of the season blaming them as the source of the chaos. I don't know either coach, but that's probay why assistants don't speak up and those kind of HC keep their jobs.

Goshen IN newspaper has a mention of the story in it today. Nothing new, but visibility into a more general population.

There have been other instances of head coach abuse where assistants were also blamed for not doing anything. And in that situation, the acts were completely horrible. It's tough to be an assistant and if you really want to climb the coaching ranks, being in a situation like this and ratting out a head coach could feel like it may be damaging to your career. Citing the program having assistants as the reason to not believe players is pretty weak.

Um I don’t have a hard time believing any college athlete anywhere standing up against toxic environments and reporting harassment? College athletes are approaching a breaking point across many different sports and divisions right now. They’re dehumanized and expected to function as property of a school, which to some extent is acknowledged when the athlete decides to play a college sport but what is not a part of the deal - mental emotional and physical abuse. Not even to begin on the statement made about the athletes tattoo that was on her rear end. I understand why you say “speak up now and attach your name to it” but unfortunately some individuals don’t have the agency to do it. They could be black listed, removed from a team, and the worst part is that with their names attached they’re going to carry it with them wherever they go in life. A quick google search and it will be right there. In a perfect world sure but unfortunately with people like stank ass Steve Aird at the head of programs, that isn’t the case.

I think it's a fair question, given both are still coaching (in the B1G, even). If you're on staff and your head coach is behaving like that, don't you think there's an ethical responsibility to take it to the administration? Or, if you're worried the admin won't do anything, take it to the university's Title IX coordinator?

I think the article clearly outlines that IU had no interest in pursuing this given they cut the investigation short and multiple people said they weren't interviewed. The problem I had with the post I replied to is that it accused players of lying because there are assistant coaches on staff.

I was just going to say, "how do we know the assistants didn't try to report?", only to not be heard, so they left quietly. They are in a bad position, too. It is so scary to send your young student-athletes off to school, knowing there are people like this out there coaching. I've seen it on the junior level a bit but at least the kids are home with their families being shown love and support, and hopefully, will help them get out of toxic environments like this. The college coaches are suppose to be the players' families and what's even scarier is that coaches like this are completely different during the recruiting process so without stories coming out like this, a player and family may not see it coming. It is one thing to be hard on your players and have high expectations. This is a whole other level of a coach being controlling and power-hungry.

My wife has a friend whose daughter played for him at Maryland. Says it was a miserable experience....

Wow. If the university doesn't do anything after this, its very clear they do not care about the program at all. The trajectory of the program is straight down.

My heart breaks for these young women. A very select elite group of people have the privilege to even make it to the college level and it’s done through their hard work but it’s only fueled by their passion and love for the game, and the environment it promotes. It’s infuriating to hear that these talented women who should be creating the best memories of their life and taking in the college experience, are instead meant with traumatic experiences that they will hold with them forever. Indiana needs to do something and something quick. This is absolutely disturbing.

Citing the program having assistants as the reason to not believe players is pretty weak. This is so incredibly true, finding your way into the coaching scene let alone the B1G coaching scene is extremely difficult. They likely won’t step in for the same reasons that the athletes in articles and other publications won’t attach their name. We live in a world where reporting individuals for abuse often times back fires more often than not especially in the world of sports. Let’s stop finding a way to take the pressure off of IU’s admin and Aird by blaming assistants for not doing enough and just hold the individuals accountable for being abusive who need to be held accountable.

Sometimes you don't know what someone is really like until you work with/under them. From what I hear, most people outside of Aird's teams think highly of him. And is it verified that Gwitt has known Aird his entire adult life? They both went to the same college but there were no overlaps when they were in school at the same time.
