You are so black and white. He is not the best at in game changes. This has caused this board distress for years. Keeping Gillis in when she struggled...a lot. Loberg passing and hitting woes. This year might be the worst example of Sheffield stubbornness given the amount of PROVEN talent he had on the bench. It's okay that people are upset about the fact that Demps rode the bench when Franklin couldn't pass or hit and wasn't being used out of the back row, and Julia couldn't terminate. Does that mean Sheffield isn't a good coach? No. Could flexibility in game have given us a chance to pull away in the last couple matches? Who knows, but Demps has shown she can make a difference in many aspects of the game. I'd have tried it given how abysmally Franklin was playing. Umm yea let’s cool it on this a bit. Sheff is fresh off of winning the national championship, meaning he can recruit and coach well enough to win it all. Was I also frustrated Jade didn’t get more time when other players weren’t playing as well? For sure. IMO she was underutilized all season. But also doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to put together a team to win the whole dang thing. You're saying what I said, and please don't ever tell me to cool it on a discussion board.

This is really something, a reminder of how big "the team" actually is.

This is on Sheff, The last game made Demps really unhappy. To me, this is silly. Demps isn't a fit for the right side and she had all year to determine if she could beat out franklin/orzol. I doubt she made her decision based on the last match. Unfortunately, she couldn't carve out a bigger role with the badgers, but she is talented and I expect her to do well wherever she ends up. As far as the Pitt match, the primary problem was serve receive. Demp's strengths didn't line up with the problem, so I'm not at all surprised she didn't get the call in that match. However, I would have liked to see Shanel stay in and play across the back to see if she could have helped stabilized serve receive, especially since the back row attack wasn't used anyway and the sub was already spent on serving. That to me was the head scratcher.

That to me was the head scratcher. There was a stretch of matches early where I tracked how many backrow attempts there were and how many kills etc. I stopped, and maybe I should have kept going. My gut tells me that they became less frequent as the setters got more comfortable setting the middles 'quick', but I could be wrong. I may have to run through the box scores of Penn State and Pitt to see what 'backrow attack' looked like the final weekend. ---------------- No way to say just from the play-by-play in the box score how many attempts there might have been that didn't end in a kill or error, so no percentages, but otherwise: - against Penn State, Franklin had three kills, one error on backrow attacks (out of 13 kills, 3 errors total) - against Pitt, Franklin had three kills and two errors on backrow attacks (out of 15 kills, 7 errors) Neither Orzol nor Demps had a back row kill or error.

for those who watched the semi finals - How many of us had what-if thoughts about Claire? I know this has been a special year for her but I for one can’t help but wonder a little bit

I know this has been a special year for her but I for one can’t help but wonder a little bit Dennis Punzel tweeted about her being named all-american, and somebody asked why she hadn't ended up at Wisconsin. I responded with my guess that the UW 2017 class oof Rettke, Hilley Loberg, Hart, and Mariah Whalen meant there just wasn't a scholarship available for 2018 freshman Chaussee. He confirmed that, and he added that she was seen as a 'development project' to wouldn't be ready to contribute for a year or two. And that he's turned out to be the case. Good for her, I hope they win on Saturday

To be honest I don't think Wisconsin would've been a good fit for her based on personnel and style of play. I think she'd have a tough time breaking the lineup her first 2-3 years at Wisconsin with Loberg/Haggerty on the team, so her development is not the same. Even if she beats out Loberg, Wisconsin was always such a middle dominant team with Rettke that outside weren't set as much, and they didn't run the same speed to the left that she hits off Dilfer/Lazaro. Her fit with Louisville and DBK just seems like a perfect match. I feel like she went to the right program for her and we're seeing the results of that in a pretty spectacular way, but I don't think she has the same path at Wisconsin. I hope other Badger fans are rooting for her on Saturday, she's a great kid.

Paul Sunderland said that Wisconsin staff told Chaussee she was too short to play for Wisconsin, in the Final 4 last year. I don't know it was a joke or not.

Chaussee is listed at 6 feet even. Gregorski at 5'11", Kelli Bates 5'11", Deanna Kraft 6 even, Orzol 6 even...

Claire was an undersized decent pin hitter who struggles still with ball control. It was not at all unreasonable for Wisconsin to pass on her out of high school. Obviously now she’s really developed her attacking and has been great but her doing that her super senior year doesn’t mean Wisconsin should catch flack for not offering her out of high school lol

I never bought the too small line. It’s not like UW has not had similarly sized (or smaller) outside starting most years and into the future.
