Women's Volleyball Holds Off UC Davis; Ah Mow Wins 100th

DAVIS, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (14-6, 11-1 BW) battle back and held off UC Davis to win in five sets, 16-25,25-12,28-26,19-25,15-9 on Saturday night at the University Credit Union Center (formerly known as The Pavilion). The victory saw several milestones for the Rainbow Wahine as Hawai'i head coach Robyn Ah Mow recorded her 100th career win; Amber Igiede put down her 800th career kill and Riley Wagoner picked up her 600th career kill towards the end of the fifth set.

Ah Mow improved her overall record to 100-35 and in conference raised her mark to 71-9. She is the second Rainbow Wahine head coach to record 100 wins at Hawai'i.

Junior middle blocker Amber Igiede put down a career-high 24 kills and hit .432 (24-8-37) to lead the 'Bows. In the fifth set she pounded her 800th career kill. It marked her 18th-straight 10+ kill match and was tied with UC Davis' Josephine Ough with a match-high seven blocks. She also had three digs and a service ace.

Freshman outside hitter Caylen Alexander tied her career high with 18 kills while hitting .385 (18-3-39). It was Alexander's 11th double-digit kill match. She was a bright spot in the first set, putting down five kills in frame.

Setter Kate Lang issued 50 assists and tied her career highs with five kills and five blocks.

On defense, Tayli Ikenaga, Kendra Ham, and Wagoner all came up with double-digit digs. Ikenaga picked up a team-high 14 digs for her 12th double-digit dig match of the year. Ham's 12 digs was her sixth 10+ dig match—her fourth in the last six matches. Ham added three service aces as well. It marked Wagoner's seventh double digit dig match as she tallied 11 for the match to go with her five kills. Her five kill in the match allowed her to reach 600 career kills.

I've never seen it done. Apparently Hawai'i ran it in the 80's. Ryan Tsuji mentioned they'd be lined up as a triangle. In that case, half the rotations have two of the middles in front, and the other half have two in the back. Both Westerberg and Igiede can play anywhere in the front, and could both play back row if needed. Evans is likely middle duty only, so would always have a sub in the back. My guess is we never see it, but it's fun to think how it might work.

I've been following this three-middle discussion a bit. I'm looking to watch a true triangle three-middle offense (not a MB as OPP/RS, which can be different), so maybe I'll try to dig up some old Hawai'i games.

So I saw that Hawaii is 71-9 in Big West games since Robyn became coach. Of the 9 losses, 5 are to Cal Poly, 3 to UCSB and 1 to UCI. Hawaii has not lost to LBSU since 2016, Dave's last year as coach.

Did someone mention that the Beach’s O’Sullivan is injured? The home court advantage and potential Beach injury might give Hawaii a huge advantage.

Agreed but in this second round, the stakes are even higher so these games should be that much more competitive. Home or not

The matches against the Beach are always competitive (even though Hawaii has had its way with them). It's an old rivalry so there's always more relish on the hotdog for matches against the Beach. I'm sure Tyler and his team would love to steal one from the Bows at the Stan. At this point, every match will be competitive. Hawaii's already been tested a bunch of times being stretched to the limit (just happened against Davis.) The Bows know what they need to do. The Big West is still up for grabs and a loss here will be trouble for Hawai'i.
