And yet Emery and Hiapo are both looking to get out. Since this followed my comment about my article, I assume that is what it references. The claim made about that interview is still incorrect which is the point. I will always correct erroneous interpretations of articles I write and interviews I conduct because I don't want anyone to think I wrote or even suggested things that aren't true. That article didn't suggest that Emery was upset or burdened by the input. It stated that the other two setters were as per their comments to me. Something obviously made Emery want to move on. That's unfortunate, but I hope she finds what she is looking for. I hope Arizona sorts out its setting issues, as well. There were problems this year with setting, although Rubio has very rarely criticized Emery publicly. That's been the case for her entire career. I have no idea what is said at practice or in meetings, but I know he has been especially careful about how he talks about her publicly. Same with Hiapo.

Thought I’d jump in on this one…
I didn’t take your article about the setters as implying they were upset or burdened. In fact, quite the opposite. Your comments seemed to imply all three were appreciative of Gwen’s feedback.
Some of the comments on this platform (and in the comments on your articles) feel like they are motivated by a frustration with Dave and the lack of their desire for “success” in the program than what you actually write, Kim.
As a parent of one of the girls, I have no complaints about the program. I’m a huge fan of the coaches. And what little interaction I’ve had with these young women make me grateful my daughter is here.
Our family has relationships with several girls playing around the country. The stories I hear from some of the girls directly, or from their parents, make me beyond thankful for my daughter to be under the influence of Dave, Rita, Brandon, and Gwen.
They coach her up. She is encouraged and challenged. Overall, there is a good team culture. My girl was welcomed and fit right in day 1…especially from the girl who starts over her, which says a lot about that young woman and the culture the coaches establish.
I’ll leave it to the arm chair experts to lament the woes of the program.
But from this parent’s perspective…I’m grateful my daughter is here.

I’m definitely glad that you and your daughter are happy with your choice to commit to UofA. As a homegrown fan, it’s good to hear the girls are being taken care of. However, from the fan perspective, who would be happy with the record of this team? This team had the talent and opportunity to make the tournament and failed to do so. You’re right that I’m frustrated with the coaching staff. It just feels like the program is falling from national relevance and this staff is unable to change that narrative.

I do appreciate your frustration. But from my perspective, I see two years plagued with injuries followed by an incredible recruiting class. Of that top 10 recruiting class, Covid impacted Ware’s onramp and China got a concussion. The loss of two 6’ 4” players from the same class had the predictable impact - it hurt! Add on top of that Puk’s “sophomore slump.” What I’ve seen this year are the coaches making mid game adjustments to try and spark the team. I also saw them implement a new approach to practice to foster a more competitive practice environment. My daughter is incredibly frustrated with the team’s overall performance. But she also sees the things they are doing to spark the girls. Not an expert on the x’s and o’s of volleyball, but this year feels like its on the girls, not the coaches.

I agree with your perspective! That top ten class definitely did not come to fruition. Especially when you consider that Emery, Jaelyn and Sofia are the only ones who play. I do think the coaching staff could have made some changes to make the team more competitive. First, they could have played Dilara. Rubio seemed fixated on trying to get the dream team of Sofia, Jae and Puk to work but it wasn’t. Then, instead of going to your best passing pin, you force a true freshman that wasn’t ready on to the court. Secondly, Arizona had a setting problem. Emery’s overall game was why she played, but her set location and decision making were not great. I would have loved to see Ana or Ava get some run. Not just a couple of sets here and there. It also wouldn’t have hurt to sub out Jae in the back row for a DS.

And what little interaction I’ve had with these young women make me grateful my daughter is here. There's definitely frustration with the program from the fan base, and it's often focused on Dave. I have always said that I don't know how Arizona will be when he retires, but I will personally miss him. I learn a lot from him, and he's extremely generous with his time. I am also old enough to have watched Kim Glass in an Arizona uniform, so I have memories of great volleyball in Tucson under Rubio I am glad the kids are happy, because that's ultimately what matters. As for other things, here's the article about Hiapo going to BYU and about the incoming setter from UConn. www.azdesertswarm.com/volleyball/2022/12/12/23506517/arizona-volleyball-transfer-merry-go-round-hiapo-rosenthal

Found some additional information on Kasen Rosenthal. Her sister Tanon Rosenthal is a 2023 commit for the Arizona beach volleyball team.

All three transfers so far have announced so
Becca Morse, L, Oregon (should have two years of eligibility left) Kasen Rosenthal, S, UConn (will be true sophomore) Kylie Wong, L, Chandler-Gilbert CC (will be true sophomore)
Need a middle or two though… only two on the roster for next year

And yet Emery and Hiapo are both looking to get out. Hiapo fulfilled her four year promise. I don’t think anyone in the program is mad at her for exploring her options off a year that she would’ve never been playing at Arizona when she committed. She’s been criminally underrated because she’s been here. I hope she moves up and goes off and finally gets the recognition she deserves! What is the scouting report on Hiapo (passing, serving, digging, setting, etc.)? I looked at her stats, but I haven't watched her play. I would appreciate some insight from Arizona fans who have watched her play the last four years, since box scores don't tell the whole story.

I think her ceiling is somewhere between a 2.25-2.3, but more likely to fall in a 2.15-2.25 range. The thing about her though, is she can give you ~2.2 passing even while covering 60% of the court. She can get to most balls, whether tips or off blocks, but she can get overpowered or can get caught leaving base defense early. Second contact is usually really solid and it’s something I know she likes working on. What I will say, she’s volleyball obsessed. She wants to be in the gym all the time. Super hard worker. Super coachable. Wants to win badly. Great teammate. Great communicator on court. Never harps on mistakes. Always bounces back immediately.

Given the passing we've had lately, 2.15 might as well be 2.4. Thank you. Sounds like a great addition overall. Is she a good server?

Is she a good server? serves tough for sure. her serving number were much better last year than this year though, but that’s largely in part of a new serving strategy arizona had implemented this past season. strategy isn’t bad necessarily, but she just had three years of serving different areas I guess

She comes from a volleyball family-parents are both coaches. Raised in the gym. Really high Vball IQ. She was a REALLY good undersized OH in high school. Also set, I believe. She will be a great upgrade on the back row, I believe. No Mary Lake 😕, but who is?
