Emery playing is about more than just setting. Gwen told me that she bought into what they are trying to do on offense quicker than the other two. Dave talks about her defense and blocking being superior to everyone, but she's still working on her setting being on par with everything else. And now she's in the portal... she has all the intangibles to be a great setter. she has size and physicality, while also being mobile. Wonderful block and defender as well. What’s been lacking is the setting itself. If someone is willing to put 100% into developing her setting, she’ll be an incredible asset for whatever team. While her blocking, athleticism, etc. improved here, her setting seemed to regress over the years. I’m really hopeful a change of scenery and staff can do that for her. Wish her the best!

No surprise after an interview I saw mentioning the new setting coach looked at every play and what they did wrong with their technique and it was sometimes hard on what to focus on? Why these coaches think that would help is beyond me. Especially during the game? Can you imagine any football coach doing that to his quarterback during the game? Your arm should have been straighter. Ugh. She will make someone's team very good. Good for her.

There were times during the season where Emery’s decision making and location negatively impacted the game, and it happened often. There would be times when a player would be getting kills and then all of a sudden they wouldn’t get set again, free balls would be set to a cold player etc. She is a good player, but her setting left much to be desired.

Emery's setting isnt great. I have read she plays because of her defense. You dont have a setter play just bc of their defense. The setting is first priority. Hopefully one of the other setters can be better, or they can get a transfer.

It's the two younger setters who said that they get info overload sometimes. I did those interviews and I explicitly asked her. She said that she likes the numbers. Emery has always received feedback on every set. She mentioned it to me her first season when she said it was the first time she had had that. I think the numbers were new, but the feedback wasn't. Also, it wasn't during games. It was after practice.

Arizona's swung hard at the portal the past couple of seasons and hasn't really had a hit yet. Will be curious if they can be more successful this year.

And yet Emery and Hiapo are both looking to get out. Hiapo fulfilled her four year promise. I don’t think anyone in the program is mad at her for exploring her options off a year that she would’ve never been playing at Arizona when she committed. She’s been criminally underrated because she’s been here. I hope she moves up and goes off and finally gets the recognition she deserves!

I’m probably mistaken, but the last transfer I remember who played well here was that Opposite AA from West Virginia. I’m hoping we don’t have a Dilara 2.0 situation. Meaning we have a viable player riding the bench for whatever reason even though they are capable of making this team better.

She was not going to be the difference between an average team and a great team, but she did some good things for Arizona during her two years in Tucson, especially after China got hurt then pregnant. She was also a sweetheart.

Earlier this year, I did a brief piece on China Rai Crouch and why she was gone last year. After that, I did some follow-up interviews with her, associate HC Rita Stubbs, and a couple of the players about how the year was for China while raising her baby and trying to do school/volleyball stuff at the same time. I finally got time to write it, so here it is www.azdesertswarm.com/volleyball/2022/12/2/23487904/arizona-wildcats-volleyball-crouch-pregnancy-support-stubbs-fellows Tomorrow I have one coming out about the transfers out of the program as well as the 2023 class that just signed. I waited to do a story on the class because everything was so busy during signing week that I just didn't think it would get the traction I wanted. Now that there's less going on, I thought it would be a good time. I will post it when it publishes.

And yet Emery and Hiapo are both looking to get out. Since this followed my comment about my article, I assume that is what it references. The claim made about that interview is still incorrect which is the point. I will always correct erroneous interpretations of articles I write and interviews I conduct because I don't want anyone to think I wrote or even suggested things that aren't true. That article didn't suggest that Emery was upset or burdened by the input. It stated that the other two setters were as per their comments to me. Something obviously made Emery want to move on. That's unfortunate, but I hope she finds what she is looking for. I hope Arizona sorts out its setting issues, as well. There were problems this year with setting, although Rubio has very rarely criticized Emery publicly. That's been the case for her entire career. I have no idea what is said at practice or in meetings, but I know he has been especially careful about how he talks about her publicly. Same with Hiapo.
