I think Deitre was probably listed as the volunteer assistant while they were going through the HR process because Rita was alone after Chan left. Not sure, though. Haven't talked to her or Rita yet. I just know that the general HR process at UA can take a month or more sometimes. It might be slightly different for Athletics, but in actual academic and support positions, it's a long, stupid process. One of the things I hated most about working there. (There were actually a lot of things I hated about working there. lol) Anyway, my slightly different take on her than the official announcement by Arizona.

I was extremely surprised that Deitre was listed as a volunteer. Altruistic is not one of the first things that comes to mind when I think of Deitre (yes, shade). At the same time, I still think it's a bit discouraging that Charita wasn't able to hit the ground running a little better than she has. Hiring and announcing a full staff quickly--like has happened other places such as UCLA, Texas A&M, etc--is pretty important. She's been a head coach previously and was at Arizona long enough to be familiar enough with the internal workings. This all may be just a perception problem, but it also seems completely unnecessary to raise any doubts.

Whose doubts? People on the Internet? I doubt Rita cares about that. I imagine having people she trusts on staff, happy players and happy recruits are higher on the list. Really, the only people I have seen pressed about her not rushing to hire or announce a full staff are people who spend a lot of time on this board. At Arizona, no one really cares. I mean, the 10th-ranked softball program decided not to announce or fill a couple of positions until summer. The Top 25 women's basketball program has gone months without announcing staff additions until after completion of all the hires. It's not uncommon here.

I guess that's a fair rebuttal (That's the way we do it at Arizona) to an extent, but it looks like Softball hired their coach in June 2021 during the pandemic, and the WBB coach has had a string of 20 win seasons since she started in 2016. I guess time and results will tell.

I mean… I don’t know if I wanted her to rush and make a hire. However, she said in her press conference that Dave was going to retire 2-3 weeks before it was announced, and now it’s been an additional month on top of that, and only one hire has been announced. It’ll be interesting to see who she was holding out for.

I went to Saturday's spring matches. I spent a lot of time talking to parents so I didn't pay super close attention to the volleyball. Mostly talked about music with Nicole Briggs' dad because we're both into punk rock.
As far as volleyball, Ava Tortorello now wears a DS/L jersey. She's not setting anymore.
When I was watching, UConn transfer Kasen Rosenthal was doing most of the setting. Ana Heath played some opp. Puk Stubbe and Sofia Maldonado Diaz were on the left side. Lauren Rumel has joined Alayna Johnson and Nicole Briggs in the middle. She played both middle and pin in high school, so it is not a huge surprise.
Becca Morse still has Arizona on her IG profile, but she must be finishing the quarter in Oregon. She's still not listed on the roster. None of the freshmen enrolled early this year.
Juco transfer Kylie Wong was the primary DS/L (all DS were in libero jerseys). Kaori Robertson was the other DS who played a lot. She was part of the class 2 years ago and enrolled at Arizona at that time but was not on the roster until last year. She didn't play last year (or didn't play much if I missed a brief appearance), though.
Jaelyn Hodge is in a boot. If I remember correctly, it's her left foot. I talked to her mom briefly but didn't ask what was up. I plan to talk to the entire coaching staff after they've announced all the hires. I will ask Rita then.
ASU won the match, but we couldn't see the score.

I guess to add/clarify to that:
Kaori and Haven spent time at lib, Kylie and Ava split some time DSing, Kylie with more time of the two.
Jaelyn will be out for a few more weeks I assume from a foot injury.
Ana had to play opposite in 5/6 sets bc of Jaelyn’s injury. Kasen has a hurt thumb I believe so I don’t wanna put too much stock into her performance. I’m under no impression that she’s locked in as starter. Was just what arizona had to do bc of injuries.
Becca isn’t able to enroll at Arizona until next semester I believe and I don’t think she’s allowed to practice until then. Joy is gone for the semester but will be back for season.
Yes Rumel is back in the middle since we only have Alayna and Nicole at this point. Nicole’s hand-on-ball contact looked way better than last seasons.
Passing is still the major concern of this team. So many bad passes and aces, but hopefully Becca and the return of Jaelyn, who is our best pin passer at this point, will help that. Sofia and Puk looked good offensively but yeah passing no. Blocking and serving were big team struggles imo as well.
Went 3-3 set wise on the day, including 0-2 against ASU:/

That's good news about Joy Galles. Late in the season, Dave told me that she was probably the best passer they had. They don't need to lose any passing. At all. 🙂

I’m like 99% sure Zyonna made the Peru All-Star Game last week so that’s fun lol
If you would’ve asked me when she was a senior, I would’ve said there’s no way she goes and plays pro, and I bet she would have said the same thing. So proud of her and amazing to see her development, even if it’s *just* Peru for now

So proud of her and amazing to see her development, even if it’s *just* Peru for now Zyonna changed in every way possible during her 5 years at Arizona. Even her senior year when I would interview her, she would cover her face with her hoodie and give me monosyllabic answers. Her fifth season, she looked me in the eye, she would elaborate without being prompted. The change on the court was impressive but the change off the court in her confidence and the way she carried herself was even more dramatic. Great young woman.

Arizona has made its second assistant coaching hire. We knew this was coming because his wife posted to social media last week, but it's now official. Ryan Windisch comes from the juco ranks. I don't know much about the guy beyond what's in his bio, but I do know that Arizona could use help with passing, so a former libero is probably a good addition. Also a younger coach, which is probably a good thing just for balance.
