Thanks! I am impressed by what Rita has done to create her own collective.

Despite continuing to train with volleyball all spring, Sydnie Vanek finished 3rd in the long jump at Pac-12 TF Championships. Super happy for her. She’s always so positive.

No middle, no libero, hell not even an experienced setter. Rita added a freshman opp from the Netherlands to play for us in 2024, so I don’t really get this recruitment.

Quick story about Amanda DeWitt. Wildcats still need at least a middle and are looking.

Desperation for bodies on the roster? Nope. They are in a scholarship crunch relative to need as it is and are still recruiting middles from the portal from what I understand. They don't have enough scholarships to add everything they need. They have 5 pins but only one that both wants to and may be effective on the right side. That one is an incoming freshman. They tried Sydnie Vanek over there during spring, but when I talked to Rita a couple of weeks ago, she didn't think that was going to work. So, they really do need experienced depth at opp. I actually do get this addition. It's just unfortunate that somewhere something happened that put them in this position with the scholarship count.

Rita said Journey Tucker was improving quite a bit. The issue for Journey is that she didn't play part of high school due to her cancer diagnosis. So, she came in last year with even less experience than most freshmen. Alayna Johnson is a senior, but Rita kind of wanted another experienced middle to help bridge them this year.

Scholarships and roster size are two different things. 12 scholarship athletes, assuming all healthy, barely allows you to run a full practice under the best of conditions.

True, but when those scholarships aren’t properly utilized you have more issues like we are currently seeing with this roster.

Hence why I think this is a desperation move. And not sure that is great for long-term progress. Either convincing a kid to play out-of-position or having no rest for critical positions is going to be problematic over a long season.

Either convincing a kid to play out-of-position or having no rest for critical positions is going to be problematic over a long season. I can agree with that. I think I mentioned somewhere in this thread or private message that before Hodge decided to stay, Rita needed to tell her she’s going to play opposite. If she doesn’t want to play opposite, then she could look for playing opportunities somewhere else. Because Hodge refuses to move, we have to bring in two opposites when we have needs at other positions, plus we have a 6’5 lefty opposite committed for 2025.
