I'm probably going to hear it from Penn State fans but after watching the segment on Russ Rose on "At the Net" I was telling people that Penn State will never be a top program again as long as Russ Rose is the head coach. He came across as super arrogant. They talked about how he puts so much time into trying to gain an advantage and then he says that he has lost many top recruits because of his personality (maybe some of those "Top Recruits" would have given him a 'Real Advantage'). He said he may have to change and then with a smirk on his face says "probably not". For someone who has built such a top volleyball program it is disgraceful that he has left it in the shambles it is in now. Nobody is afraid to play Penn State anymore and this hire could be just what the University needs. These young girls today don't want to play for an old grump and maybe having someone they can relate to will be what brings Penn State back to its glory days. Just like you said "The landscape has changed". Dude, you are going to hear it from the antithesis of a PSU fan. An ex-Stanford SA here (MBB). My fanbase and I hardly feel warm-and-fuzzy towards Penn St, but I feel you're extraordinarily out of bounds. Why? The one aspect of PSU VB that I've always respected is Coach Rose: for a multiplicity of reasons! He is genuine. You?

I agree with all of this. Penn State is the only school to never miss the NCAA Tournament, so keeping that streak intact should be the main priority. I worked for a corporation that had 41 years of increasing profitability. The same CEO created this record and he did everything in his powers to keep it going. He started to make decisions, bad decisions, just to keep that streak going. It got to be the tail wagging the dog, the continuous streak became the goal rather than keeping the corporation financially healthy. When his handpicked successor took over, he stopped that nonsense because he saw how much the decisions made to keep that streak going had weakened the financial foundations of the company, and the decisions had mortgaged the future of the company for the present. The company has now evolved in the mean time and has completely changed in the product mix, the way it is managed, the way it makes money. It is pretty robust. Just saying. Not a good analogy. PSU volleyball has not been 'leveraged' by making every single tournament. IMO, making the tournament is akin to breaking even. Profitability is making regional finals and beyond. I don't think it's a huge ask to continue making the tournament. And I don't see how any benefit can accrue from not making the tournament.

I don't think this analogy is remotely applicable. No one is saying Penn State needs to do better than Rose did. Making the tournament isn't a high bar. And there's no real benefit to bottoming out in college sports (well, other than firing a bad coach) like there is in pro sports, which have drafts. I read your post after responding. Seems we were both thinking along the same lines.

I've visited a whole lot of college campuses across the country. Penn State has easily one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. I'll put it up there with just about any one (I'll admit that Pepperdine has the most gorgeous view of any campus I've visited...). But, getting to Penn State is a pain in the rear end. Not everyone wants to go there. If you can get them there, there's a good chance you can make them fall in love with it. But you gotta get them there first. And getting them there may be a non-starter if they want a certain environment, like a city or at least a more heavily-populated area (which means more things around, more diversity, etc.). Plus, even if you get them to visit, it just may not be there thing. The point you originally quoted may be overstated (implicitly), but it's valid. Penn State has to overcome a lot of hurdles to get not just athletes but students in general to go there. Penn State alums live to send their kids there (if they can afford it; Penn State is monstrously expensive for a public university), which keeps the alumni pool growing. But when you're talking Division I athletes who are being courted by many other big universities... yes, Penn State has to overcome a lot, and it often takes big-time coaches to draw top athletes there. Right. And now their message will be, "The legend is gone and was replaced by a coach with a 125-136 career record. Do you want to play for her or play for a coach proven to be a national title contender (or winner)?" Whew... Do wake up with those dark clouds over your head or do they build throughout the day? Take a walk outside, get some fresh air, make a wish upon a star. Tomorrow will be better. He wakes up with them dark clouds, but he isn't wrong in this instance.

First she is a southside gal, alum of Mother McAuley. I would take a southside gal in a street fight anytime. Second, do you remember watching her play? I do. She doesn't back down. I will theorize that she coaches with the same fire as when she played. I remembered Mary Coleman (including her alma mater) very well from my days in grad school at Illinois... and then I noticed she had become Mary Coleman Hambly. She didn't back down either. I wish there were less of a gulf between fans and the inner circle at Stanford WVB... I might have had a chance to say Hi to Mary once since Kevin got the job... but it is what it is. It wasn't the WVB program's idea, and the people who have come in saying they were going to change Stanford Athletics from being insular and indifferent to non-alumni fans have all failed. Stanford is a snob's paradise and always will be. Since the Bay Area is also full of people who think they're bright about ten times as much stuff as they are actually bright about, I couldn't stand it anymore.

Just like you said "The landscape has changed". I'd have to agree that in a lot of interviews the past couple years he seemed like an old grump; that happens to old men. However, I don't think he is arrogant. Over the years, when asked about his record and wins, he's responded by saying [paraphrasing], 'I remember every one of my losses.'

PSU volleyball is irrelevant til proven otherwise. I'm just going to wildly speculate that there about 318 D1 VB programs that would like to be as irrelevant as Penn State.

If Penn State was truly irrelevant, I would not have lost my )&(^%*(^%^*@#( as much as I did watching the Badgers struggle against them at home on tv before eventually pulling out the win last fall, even given the really painful series history! I also celebrated like mad when the Badgers won, to be clear!

Penn State has been a great program for decades. No team in the BIG 10 wants to play them because in any game they can beat you. With the hiring of Katie there will be continued success in the already great Penn State program.
