I'm not doubting that east coast schools want to go to California for the non-conference once every few years. But USC schedules them because they are RPI gems and USC gets to host the tournament and call the shots because they are the best team involved.
USC's 2019 RPI 'East-Coast Invitational' invited:
Villanova (22-9)
Yale (15-8)
Howard (20-12)
The obvious other point is that you don't want to schedule many West Coast teams if you are a West Coast team. The pool of 'good RPI' teams in the west is a lot more shallow than the East. If the top dogs on the West Coast schedule too many local teams, their RPI's are going to tank.

It’s not RPI that causes them to travel to LA. Tons of the schools in the northeast fill their rosters with So Cal kids, so they fly out there to play in front of their families every few years. Sure, that's the reason why USC wanted them in their tournament. Not that UMBC went 12-0 in their conference and Colgate went 15-1 in their conference in 2022. Villanova is generally upper half of their conference too, didn't have the best year last year. I know schools will sometimes choose to travel to destinations in kids hometowns at least once of the 4 years they are there, but, this smells a lot more like USC looking for some great RPI matchups that are easily winnable matches. Correct. It’s why USC wants to play them. Nova/UMBC/Colgate just want the trip. |

Bradley - 16-14
Purdue - 26-7
LSU - 13-14 - Only Home game
Marquette - 26-6
NMSU - 19-10
SJSU - 19-10
Southern Cal - 15-15
UW-Milwaukee has their work cut out for themselves.

But if they end up winning the Pac-12, their schedule full of RPI boosting mid-majors could hurt their seed. Creighton and Kentucky could be crucial games. But if they’re winning the PAC-12, at least they’ll get a seed. There would be enough RPI juice + quality PAC wins. Hawaii is a wildcard on how good they’ll be, but they’ll rack up a good W/L regardless. |
