i don't see how Samedy's departure would propel the Gophers to the top, nor losing 5 super seniors would drop the Badgers only one spot in a tough league. the loss of Stivrins may be adequately compensated by the transfer of Hord (even that is no guarantee that the Hord at Penn St would be the same at Nebraska). Nebraska's got to be ahead of both Minnesota and Wisconsin for purposes of a preseason ranking. clearly you haven't been paying attention to minnesota's off season/recruiting. they have a real shot to be at the top They do, just not as good a shot as Nebraska or Wisconsin. You clearly haven’t been paying attention to anybody other than Minnesota.

This is awesome. Anybody going?
The B1G is launching a new media days opportunity alongside the Big Ten Network in a first-of-its-kind move.
On Friday, it was announced that the B1G will host its first-ever Volleyball Media Days. The event is set for Aug. 1-2 at the BTN studios in Chicago.
According to BTN’s Emily Ehman and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), this is the first Volleyball Media Days across all NCAA conferences. All 14 B1G head coaches will attend the event, along with 1-2 players from each program.

You clearly haven’t been paying attention to anybody other than Minnesota. I'm curious to see how this plays out. I think all 3 schools have equal shots at the B1G title, but I do give Minnesota and Nebraska the slight edge because of team chemistry, back court veteran experience, and lethal combinations of hitters. This isn't to say Wisconsin does't have those elements, but other than Hart, I'm not sure who that veteran leader could be for them. Maybe Ashburn, if she gets the chance she deserves to run things? This is just my opinion, but I follow all 3 schools and it just seems like Minnesota and Nebraska have had the long view in mind for seasons now and have trained their future starting rosters really well. Wisconsin seems to be focused on each season.

Wisconsin has been more successful than Minnesota and Nebraska in the last three seasons, so their approach seems to be working fine. Obviously, they just lost a lot to graduation, so I certainly would expect them to take at least a small step back, but they seem to know what they're doing in Madison.

I'm not sure how you DON'T take a step back offensively when you lose a generational player like Samedy. Yes you have the top recruit coming in, but that talent is still unproven. Plus the Gophers still have the setter that turns All-American middles into All-Conference, and All-Conference middles into afterthoughts. I hear the optimism that she's finally 'turned the corner,' but as a Husker fan, I heard that about Hames year in and year out and even as a senior she was still frustratingly inconsistent. Yes Wisconsin lost a lot, but they have a ton of offensive weapons. Hart, Smrek, Robinson, Demps, Orzol and now Franklin and Crawford give Sheffield plenty of options to experiment with. They apparently have the right person from Europe to plug in at libero, so the big question mark is who replaces Hilley. And it is a huge one. But a lot of talent and depth still remains in Madison. Great move by the B1G to have Media Days for Volleyball. It's already BTNs 3rd most popular sport to televise and hopefully they'll keep adding more games to the TV schedule.

You're probably right in theory. But Minnesota only hit .233 last season, so if they had a great setter, they could probably improve offensively as a team even without Samedy. But it sounds like not only do they not have a great setter, they don't even have a good one. If that's the case, then yeah.

Russ retired just so he wouldn’t have to go to this lololol right! like... what's the point of this, really? How do you "media days" 14 different teams? The B1G Network has done this for Football and Basketball for years, as have other conferences. The point is more exposure for the third most popular sport on B1G Network. If they follow the formula used for Football and Basketball, all 14 coaches with 1-2 player representatives for each team will assemble in one place (B1G Studio), probably 7 teams on each day, for interviews and press conferences. As for the network, they will have wall-to-wall coverage of the news conferences, one-on-one interviews, prognostication, and short videos on the teams, players, and coaches. In the evening, there is a good chance of replays of the best volleyball matches from the past.

I agree. I think volleyball media days is a very forward-thinking idea. Hopefully, it will be a success, and some other conferences follow suit.

right! like... what's the point of this, really? How do you "media days" 14 different teams? It's about building buzz for the season, and firing up fans. They will likely announce the pre-season poll of coaches, discuss schedules and pre-conference tournaments, etc. It's very effective for football and men's basketball. The Big Ten will "wine & dine" sports reporters for this too, so it's a chance to build more coverage across B1G territory.

The one thing that BTN boasts is a cadre of good hosts and announcers that actually know what they are talking about re volleyball. That has built over years of BTN programming. Also, some outspoken coaches will hold the B1G's and BTN's collective feet to the fire. It would be nice to see a good production as opposed to the absolute dross that we are given for the NCAA tournament reveal. It would send a message.

I suspect that it will be similar to Media Days for Football or Basketball. Not a single show like a reveal would be, but coverage of a live event.
I hope many sporting news outlets send corespondents in person or virtually to the event, like local and regional newspapers and TV stations, along with some national outlets like ESPN and VolleyballMag as well. All gathering information for use leading up to and during the upcoming season.
