Wade said on a call the coach some of the reserves will be transferring to other schools after this season in order to get more playing time. I truly believe all the players on the Hawaii roster love everything about this program, university, state and fans, but seriously, lots of them could be starters on other teams. It'll be sad, but interesting to see which of the players may head out. Wish they'd stay, but totally understand their desire to play somewhere else.

Also, we know for sure Thelle, Humler, Akana and now Mouchlias are not returning. Perhaps Galloway and Hogland will stay one more year?

There are 6 players leaving on Senior Night. One of them is Devon Johnson, and Cole Hogland had said he was leaving. But Hogland said this at an autograph session, so we'll see

Tread is the starting setter on the USA U19 team. Also was voted best setter in a few tournaments. My guess is he will be the most decorated setter we ever recruited.

Buchanan did not come with the same accolades but man….I hope he can finally see the light and take over next season. My guess is the battle will be between Austin and Brett. Not sure how good Friedman is or if he is even in serious contention for PT.

Barring an amazing turnaround for Austin, I just don’t see him as starting setter next season. I saw frustration from his reserve teammates during pre match hitting drills. He wasn’t locating his sets very well at all and the guys lined up on his side of the net migrated to the other setter Josh to continue their drills until there were only 3 reserve hitters left on his side. Not the makings of a future starting setter. Just saying.

I honestly hope Bucahnan proves he can be a starter for next year. It would be great to keep Shewie at Libero. But I have an inkling feeling, Charlie moves Shewie back to set next season and inserts Eleu at lib. But still way to early.

I wouldn’t also be surprised if Charlie put Kai Taylor at Libero. The kid is supposedly a good passer. As of now, Eleu is a very good defender and covers a lot of court defensively but Charlie mentioned earlier that as a passer, he is not there yet. Hope he can work on it and maybe get there.

There may be a trend with getting “bigger” liberos. I mean Gage was 6-2 and so is Shewie. Kai, being 6-2, would fit that profile.

The best libero in the conference is Mason Briggs and he is about that size.

The top 4 teams all have starting liberos 6-0 or over.

If it’s not Austin for next season who would it be?

I can actually see Todd, Devon and Cole leaving . These 3 are best buds and I’m sensing all will leave for various different reasons. Devon might pursue beach volleyball. Todd is not assured of a spot so maybe for him, it’s time to move on. With Cole, his GF(BVS) will probably move to CA to try her hand at pro beach after her UH beach season is pau and Cole may follow her there. There is also a chance for Cole to be on the Japanese NT or play pro in Asia.

Guys like Ottmar, Parks, Marumoto, were walk ons so they will probably not be in the plans for the future with Rodriguez, Yewchuk and Justin Todd coming in. We pursued Derek Bradford and Kai Taylor so I’m assuming the UH coaches are not going to give up on them after their redshirt year.

To he honest, our depth probably was not that good. We seriously need to upgrade our talent level on the bench. UCLA has top notch reserves on their bench…probably at all positions while at UH, the only reserves that could come in and not have a major drop off are Humler, Akana and Nusterer. The rest of our bench (excluding the redshirt fresshmen) are merely practice players.

We are so fortunate that almost all of our starters are national team prospects that they know how to compete at a high level. Dimi and Spyros are on the Greece NT. Jakob for Norway. Voss was on the Jr. NT at Brazil. Even Cole is potential for the Japan NT. Nusterer with the Austrian NT. The rest of the players on the bench are either too young or just not good enough for PT.

Hawaii tied for first in Big West after holding off UC Irvine

Hawaii and UC Irvine were on-court equals for much of Friday night.

When the top-ranked Rainbow Warriors finished off a four-set victory in the series opener at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center, they had drawn even with the Anteaters atop the Big West men’s volleyball standings.

Hawaii opposite Dimitrios Mouchlias put away a season-high 23 kills and set a career best with six blocks as the Warriors handed No. 5 UC Irvine its first conference loss and forced a three-way tie for the lead with the 25-16, 17-25, 25-23, 25-22 victory before a crowd of 6,710.

“If you ask all of our guys we all like to play against really good teams, really strong players,” Mouchlias said. “That’s what we enjoy the most. That’s what competitive volleyball is.”

The Warriors (23-2, 6-1 Big West) will take a six-match winning streak into tonight’s rematch with the Anteaters (16-7, 6-1) in the series finale. Long Beach State (17-3, 6-1) also enters today’s play tied for first place after rallying from two sets down at Cal State Northridge on Friday.

Mouchlias led a UH attack that hit .451, with outside hitter Spyros Chakas finishing with 14 kills on .419 hitting and firing three of UH’s six aces. Outside hitter Chaz Galloway added nine kills on 19 attacks.

UH setter Jakob Thelle distributed 49 assists and had seven digs and ended the pivotal third set with his second kill of the match.

Middle blockers Guilherme Voss and Cole Hogland both had six kills in eight swings, with Hogland hammering match point to give UH it’s 11th straight win over UCI.

After UH ran away with the opening set, UC Irvine dominated the second with 16 kills and no errors in 25 attacks while converting on 15 of 17 sideout opportunities. After the intermission, the Warriors and Anteaters traded runs to a 23-23 tie before Thelle fed Hogland for a kill and landed a tip into the middle of the court to give UH the set.

“For us it’s always about the level of engagement,” UH coach Charlie Wade said. “I thought we executed a little better coming out for the third set.”

Chakas had four kills in a 6-0 run with Thelle on the service line that gave UH a 13-8 lead in the fourth set and the Warriors held off the Anteaters through Hogland’s final kill.

“They’re a really good team,” Chakas said. “Everyone’s a good hitter. They have a setter who can set the ball really well and so do we. … High hitting percentages, really hard serves and that’s some really high-level volleyball.”

UCI opposite Francesco Sani, the reigning AVCA National Player of the Week, led the Anteaters with 19 kills on 33 attacks to hit .455. Outside hitter Hilir Henno, the nation’s leader in aces per set, shook off a slow start to post 14 kills and three aces. Outside hitter Cole Gillis had 12 kills on 13 swings through three sets but went 0-for-9 with four errors in the fourth.

Setter Joe Karlous had 48 assists and kept UCI hitting above .400 for much of the night before finishing at .396. Perhaps his most memorable play didn’t count when he attempted to save a ball while sitting on the press table amongst the Spectrum Sports broadcast crew. The point was awarded to UH because he was off the court.

“We definitely improved tonight as we went through and started to calibrate to the environment. You’re walking into the lions’ den here,” UCI coach David Kniffin said.

“We’re a team that can stick around with anybody … It’s stringing together the consistency. Hawaii’s got a pretty seasoned team in terms of consistency and we’re still evolving as a team and we’re still improving.”

The serving advantage tilted to UH in an opening set all but decided with Keoni Thiim’s six-point service turn off the bench that gave the Warriors a 16-9 lead. Thiim fired the second of UH’s three aces in the set and Chakas forced a free ball and an overpass to set up the Warriors’ final two points of the set.

Henno’s four-point service turn sparked a 9-1 run that gave UCI a 20-11 lead and command of the second set.

UH saw a 19-15 lead in the third set wiped out by a four-point service turn from Gillis, but the Warriors edged ahead 23-21 and UH appeared to have set point for a moment at 24-21. But UCI issued a challenge and the point was replayed. UCI capitalized with Henno’s tip for a kill and a block to tie the set. After a UH timeout, Thelle set up Hogland for a kill in the middle, then finished the next rally himself to give UH the set and the lead in the match.

Warriors hang tough when downing UCI for 12th straight

Two of the top men’s volleyball teams in the country — not just the Big West — battled it out for 2 hours and 23 minutes on Friday at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. When the smoke cleared — and there was plenty of heat going on from the service line — it was top-ranked Hawai’i continuing its mastery of No. 5 UC Irvine.

With Dimitrios Mouchlias leading the way with 23 kills and in on six of the team’s 10 blocks, the Warriors defeated the Anteaters for a 12th consecutive time. Spyros Chakas added 14 kills with just one hitting error and three aces in the 25-16, 17-25, 25-23, 25-22 victory.

Hawai’i (23-2, 6-1 Big West) moves into a three-way tie with UCI (16-7, 6-1) and No. 4 Long Beach State (17-3, 6-1) atop the conference standings. The Beach kept in the running for the regular-season title when surviving in five at CSUN earlier Friday.

The Warriors and Anteaters meet again at 7 Saturday night. Friday’s attendance was 6,710 (7,399 tickets).

“We knew they were a very physical team,” Chakas said of UCI. “They have really good hitters and it was some high-level volleyball.

“In the second set, I think we got too comfortable. Our passing broke down and personally I did not have a good night passing (aced five times).”

The sting of defeat turned into sweet revenge for Moanalua on Saturday morning.

Justin Todd pounded 14 kills and Kai Rodriguez had 12 as Na Menehune swept nationally ranked Corona Del Mar (Calif.) 25-22, 25-15, 27-25 to open the Clash of the Titans boys volleyball tournament at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.

Moanalua (15-5 overall) entered the event ranked No. 6 in the USA Today national rankings. Corona Del Mar is No. 13.

George Bruening led the Sea Kings with 17 kills, including eight in the opening set. Moanalua imposed double and triple blocks on the 6-foot-9 opposite. Corona Del Mar beat Moanalua last month on the mainland, and Na Menehune had to adapt to a key change in the lineup.

“Our passing was a little different. Kaden (Sato) is out, a little injury from our Castle game, so we had to sit him out for today,” Moanalua coach Alan Cabanting said. “We had to move Christian (Tafao), our opposite, into that passing lane along with Chico (Rowan). Corona’s float serve gave us fits when we were up there, and those two did a really great job stabilizing our pass so we can run a really, really strong offense.”

Moanalua had four aces, including two by Todd. Jaycen Bush added five kills, while Zack Yewchuk tallied four kills and two blocks. Setter Malu Wilcox had 27 assists and an ace, and AJ Matsumoto chipped in 12 assists.

Kaden Kavanaugh added four kills for CDM. Setter Ryan Gant finished with 25 assists.

The Sea Kings were without two starters, 6-6 outside hitter Sterling Foley and 6-5 middle blocker Cade Alacano.

“Moanalua came out. They were ready to play. They are a solid team with some pretty good pins. We weren’t prepared to battle, and that’s important for us. They were able to capitalize and really build momentum,” Corona Del Mar coach Katey Thompson said. “We were down a couple of guys. That’s not an excuse for how we played. Moanalua is a fantastic team, but that definitely changes a few things on our side.”

The visitors trailed 6-2 in the opening set before surging ahead 9-7. Moanalua then took command with a 15-8 run. Corona Del Mar trailed 22-17 and closed the gap to 24-22 before Todd ended the set with his fourth kill.

The second set began with a similar trend. Moanalua led 7-3 before Corona Del Mar tied it at 8 on a roof by Thomas Dolak on Todd, a 6-8 senior. Moanalua then powered its way to a 17-7 run as Wilcox distributed the ball to Todd (five kills), Rodriguez (four kills) and Bush (three). Bush’s roof on Reid McCullen ended Set 2.

The Sea Kings had their best game after that, rallying from a 22-20 deficit for a 25-24 lead after a kill by Kavanaugh.

However, two hitting errors and a back-row attack gave Moanalua three consecutive points and a sweep.

“From the last time we played, watching videos, we knew (Bruening) would be hitting in his areas. In the first set, I was getting mad at the boys because we had practiced where they needed to be,” Cabanting said. “Once we got into the second and third sets, they were in the right spots and digging balls, or a least touching the ball. He’s a great player so he got his kills, but it was pretty good.”

Moanalua beat Beckman (Calif.) at the Hawaii Invitational last month, then took the title with a win over host ‘Iolani. They remain sharp despite a lack of elite competition in the OIA.

“We continue what we’re doing. There’s a couple of plays there where we just speed-balled the ball over. I think we can get better at attacking the ball. Those confusion plays are the ones we’ve got to work out,” Cabanting said. “We’ve got to make sure we’re constantly attacking and forcing the other team out of system.”
