I am curious how the MLBPA feels about the Ohtani thing. I suspect that are perfectly happy to have a new standard of players getting paid $70M/year. Of course, it's not really $70M/year. Deferred money is worth less than money in pocket right now. Always. So it's really more like $50M/year, which is still probably enough for most people to scrape by on. As for avoiding the payroll tax -- the players don't want a payroll tax anyway. They don't want anything that slows down salary growth. In theory the Dodgers should be investing the money they would be paying Ohtani so that they can afford to pay him 10 years from now, but I guess that's up to them.

I am curious how the MLBPA feels about the Ohtani thing. NPV is 10 years $460m. Public - it is seen and reported as 10 years $700m. This seems like more of win for the MLBPA than 10/$460m? But, I would have thought his value would have been more than $500m, so I think the LAD got a good deal here. And the MLBPA is probably not excited about a NPV less than $500m. I am guessing they are a bit more down on the contract. Even for someone like myself that is more likely to invest money than spend money - I would think it is really cool to have that kind of deferred money coming 11-20 years from now. Even with the 0% interest given to Ohtani - what an incredible floor of income streams he gets for his middle ages.

Yamamoto follows Ohtani to Dodgerland.

Yamamoto follows Ohtani to Dodgerland. Dang it! Was hoping the Yankees could sign him but I guess not. Until they get pitching, Yanks will not win another title let alone make it to the WS.

It's been over a decade since their last WS appearance, which is magnified considering they had seven in the 13 years prior (between 96-09).

Yup, back then they had a good balance of pitching and hitters. Now Cashman is big on hitters and by the playoffs these hitters are worn down by the length of the season so they're not performing. Look at Judge...two years ago a hell of a season but choked in the playoffs aka Alex Rodriguez style. Signed a lucrative contract off season and bam...sidelined for a good part of last season. What was it...an injured toe or something? Cashman needs to go.

Crazy to think the Dodgers were only 5th in payroll last year. The Mets had $130M more salary than the Dodgers. Even San Diego had higher payroll than the Dodgers.

San Diego has so many bad contracts. Preller has handicapped their ability to do anything. They had a chance to be freed from the Machado deal when he opted out, but they got back in for an even worse deal. That money plus some would have far greater value towards Soto and have him and Tatis together for 10 years.

Results of 2024 hall of fame balloting revealed tonight. Seems like Adrian Beltre is a lock, and Joe Mauer and Todd Helton have a good shot. Billy Wagner also has a shot. Gary Sheffield likely doesn't make it.

Next year is Ichiro.
Talk about your absolute, no-doubt, locks....
I have always wondered whether the Mariners might eventually retire #51 for two players -- Ichiro and Randy Johnson.
