AmeriCanvbdad is legit on this board. Has always been a reasonable VT poster. Thank you for that. I do admit I get out of hand on the other side of the board but I try to not let that bleed over to this side. dodger AmeriCanvbdad is a highly reputable and respected VB parent, whose posts concerning his DD and the club scene/recruiting game for PSAs are spot-on. You, on the other hand? There was no reason to question his experience or his motives. Your being a well known pot-stirrer...one who uses colons for all punctuation... chill.

Talked to the athlete; so your account is athlete’s account of how situation transpired ! Per conversation with daughter and then related to you and then to us. What odds do you give that this is in fact an offer to a 2nd choice (daughters story) that would only be honored if school does not get there first choice? Meaning school offered same scholarship to 2 girls; and one girl thought she had time to decide but then discovered she lost offer. Versus second presumption: that when she hesitated to commit school got nervous and had to move to next on list and make offer so as not to lose out on their top options? Because that's not how it works (or at least not in our experience). My daughter received offers from schools where she was their first preferred choice. All of those schools gave her time to decide. One school, knowing that their second choice had to make some decisions, then asked our daughter to make her choice regarding them. Because she was their first choice they held out for as long as they could but there was no panic in their decision. Dodger, it's obvious that you do not want to believe my account and that's fine. I know it happened and how things went down in the account I relayed. Bottom line is, have clear cut communication with schools that are recruiting you. Don't be scared to ask pointed questions, so that you know exactly where you stand. Its not really about what i believe: or even know: i just thought your conclusions of first story were potentially inaccurate without corroboration or maybe the coaching staffs side of story ; You now relate your own experience: a story with direct first hand knowledge and one is second hand knowledge: my only real point was that your conclusion without also having coaches account was incomplete : now i would be first to agree that your account of friends experience has potential to be accurate; but also potential to be incomplete as to what went down. Although this is an academic exercise for me i would say our two levels of experience are different on 2 levels: perspective and the number of recruiting experiences. My point: often we under hear and over react: i like a more balanced approach to these stories but i certainly understand your perspective. Curious: did your daughter chose the school that needed a quick yet un-panicked decision or one of other 3?

I honestly hope and wish that they are reputable parents!!!! I cast no aspersions on their reputation!! Just started an informational conversation on recruiting experiences. Thanks for english writing lesson: take care: oh wait: Curious what makes one a “pot stirrer”? And “well known” at that!! Have i stirred your pot before??

Curious - how long is the list of potential recruits for a P5 program? A mid tier? Any coaches/experienced parents/players who could give a little Insight?

Curious - how long is the list of potential recruits for a P5 program? A mid tier? Any coaches/experienced parents/players who could give a little Insight? Speaking solely from our experience the list is going to vary. The important question to ask is where is your daughter on their list. imo I'm guessing that the more prominent the program the longer the list, as more girls would have interest in that school. One school that showed interest in my DD had her as top five for their hitters list (that usually means number five) and top two or three for their specific position (meaning number three). After seeing who they got I totally understand why they were holding out to see if they could get her. I would've picked her over my kid too!

"I'm guessing that the more prominent the program the longer the list, as more girls would have interest in that school"
Funny, I have always felt the P5 schools have like 3 kids on their active list for a position and replace 1 when 1 goes away. For high academic D3 schools that are 80K per year it feels like the coaches are working like 10 per position as they know many won't meet acceptance criteria or be able to afford the school.

Like I said, I can only go by our experience (and the experience of others I've talked to). I feel pretty confident in saying that P5's lists are longer than 3 kids for each position.

This is accurate. If you have ever seen a "war room" in one of the NFL drafts it is very similar. Only most teams will only have 3 or 4 needs tops per class vs many postions in the NFL. (there are always exceptions). Most will go 4-5 deep per position, again depending on the team. You have to figure not all PSA's will fit the mold for grades, geography, skill level/potential upside, transfer portal variables etc..

Similarly, how long is that list for a top 5 school? Like, if you know the top schools in the country are calling, how many other people are on that list? From experience, usually 5 girls per position they are looking at... Maybe a couple after that on the radar but not top of the pursue list. We got some interesting mailings from schools that we never contacted, never heard from before and weren't on our radar. Come June 15th some reached out some didn't.

You have to figure not all PSA's will fit the mold for grades, geography, skill level/potential upside, transfer portal variables etc.. So if you’ve got top schools calling you, is it safe to assume you’re in their top 5 for your position? I would never assume anything, especially with the transfer portal in play. It will always be fluid. After the 15th it will be you or your PSA's role to figure that out. The more direct the better. The coaches will let you know (most of the time). If you are on the fringe or in close competition, it may go one way or the other. Bottom line is ask the questions, get a feel of the culture, if it's a fit move forward and ask what the next step is in the recruiting process. If it's not a fit move on. Let the coaching staff know it's not a fit. They will appreciate you being direct. This is a very incestuous group. Many times they will pass along names to schools that would potentially be a fit. On the flip side, they will also share parents or players who turn into a PIA.

Fairly accurate way to look at it is the higher the nationally ranked power 5 is the smaller their list at each position will be. The very top teams aren’t likely to go past two or three deep. The list gets bigger the farther back the team is ranked. They will also look overseas to fill the list. If they want you they will offer you on the first day. If they have you ranked lower than 1 on their list they will tactfully try and buy time. They will say they don’t offer scholarship unless a recruit takes a visit. So they will tell you they want to get you on campus. Some of them will be upfront and tell you that they are offering another player and if they don’t accept they will be offering you. Prior to the 15th, they are pumping you with mail and all the shiny stuff. But they’re doing that with several others at your position too. They want everyone to want them before they call on the first day. But by far, of all kids recruited, most kids aren’t offered on the first day so if you’re kid isn’t, it’s nothing to stress about. Be organized and schedule the calls giving each one 45 mins. Calls will have to be spread out over 2 and sometimes 3 days. After that you’ll have a good idea of where you’re at.

I pretty much agree. Top schools can have shorter lists because they are more likley to get the kids they go after. Middle tier and lower schools need to have deeper lists because there is a good chance your highest skill prospects consider you are a safety school.

They might not offer you on the first day but as things shake out over the next week or so, they will come in and offer after they lose out on the first ones they offered. It just keeps going from there. If they lose out on their top couple they will punt until next class or wait for the portal kids after the season. Or they might offer a walk on spot with the understanding you could earn a scholarship in the future.
