kiyoat you make a good point. It's almost impossible for midmajor coaches to perfectly predict during the preceding Spring how all 12 OOC opponents will pan out. P5 teams don't have to play the guessing game because they will get plenty of resumé opportunities in conference. I don't think anyone can fault USD for West Virginia dropping from 2021 to 2022. Beating a P5 team, any P5 team, makes it look like you tried to schedule up, even though in reality USD is at a higher level than WV to begin with. That paradox is why at least 1-2 of the road games should have involved P5's or "sure thing" midmajors like Western Kentucky, Rice, Marquette, Colorado State - to name a few examples that aren't super far away geographically. Hopefully the Yotes will get a fair shake from the committee, because they have the talent, experience, and coaching to win in the NCAAT. And, I agree with your comments about Summit coach of the year.

Not an excuse, but this schedule looked better on paper a few months ago. West Virginia really tanked. Some of it is luck no doubt. And then there's bad luck and there's good luck. Really liked this breakdown, thanks for it!

...That paradox is why at least 1-2 of the road games should have involved P5's or "sure thing" midmajors like Western Kentucky, Rice, Marquette, Colorado State - to name a few examples that aren't super far away geographically. Hopefully the Yotes will get a fair shake from the committee, because they have the talent, experience, and coaching to win in the NCAAT. Yeah, Good point on the road tourneys. I have to imagine there were other opportunities out there. Our situation in 2019 was similar to now. The RPI was hovering between 38 and 40 for a few weeks at the end of the season. We had a top-50 loss at Iowa State (#30) and four top-100 wins over Iowa (#92) DenverX2 (#74) and Wyoming (#67). We were upset in the Semifinals of the Summit Tournament by Omaha, maintained a #38 RPI, and did not get an at-large bid. I assume the top-100 wins over P-5 teams didn't hold enough weight, because we had no bad losses. We only played one top-50 team. In the NIVC Tournament we ended up in the championship match, losing to Georgia Tech. I think both teams were probably better than at least some of the teams that did get at-large bids that year. Ga Tech was a ranked team through most of 2020, IIRC. The 2021 Omaha team was just as good, if not better than the 2019 Yotes. They scheduled very tough, and ended up 3-7 in the non-conference. They lost to eventual national runner-up Nebraska (5 sets!), #11-RPI Creighton, #24 Illinois, #56 Iowa St, #71 SMU in 5 sets, #85 ASU in 5 sets, beat #76 Weber State and #96 Georgia in four sets, and #201 Drake in three sets. After winning the Summit Regular season then losing to South Dakota in the championship, they weren't even a blip on the radar of the NCAA. Why? Because losing 7 non-con matches kills a mid-major's RPI (#74), regardless of who those losses are to. So there is a limit to how a tough non-con helps your cause (as a mid-major) IMHO. There is a fine line between too easy and too tough. As you alluded to, it's a moving target with no room for error.

Props to the Summit League for showing game for free.
That said, the links to the NDSU game are a little weird. Apparently they want me to watch a UNO-Denver game from last spring.

UND and NDSU slide by Oral Roberts and KC, respectfully, in five sets each.
Denver and Omaha beat bottom-dwelling WIU and St Thomas in 4-sets each.

With just 5 or 6 conference matches left of the regular season, Divisions between the three tiers have deepened. In the Top tier, USD, NDSU, Omaha, UND and Denver are all within 1/2 match of each other, although the order of teams has not changed since last week. This group is a near-lock for the 6-team tournament. I think that the Yotes have a slight edge in remaining schedule, plus the slight edge in record for a regular-season title. North Dakota has a real gauntlet left, even if those matches are mostly at home. In the Middle tier, there is still a tight 3-way race for 6th place, with the last tournament spot on the line. SDSU, Kansas City and Oral Roberts are running out of time to make their case, and generate some separation from the other two. Given the remaining schedule, I'll give SDSU the slight edge. St Thomas and WIU will be out of the Summit Tournament race with one or two more losses.

2020 Denver ..............South Dakota (3) Sioux Falls, S.D.
2021 Omaha ..............South Dakota (2) Vermillion, S.D.
2022 ?.......................?........................Omaha, NE
In terms of trends, notice how the last four seasons's Summit tournaments have been marked by more chaos. To me, this points to more parity among the top-level teams rather than single-team dominance.

Recent streaming access development:
Midco Sports Network, a regional sports channel in the Dakotas and most of Minnesota, has picked up South Dakota, North Dakota and South Dakota State's streaming of non-televised games on its "MidcoSN+" digital service. This is a premium add-on to Midco cable, but it is also stand-alone. So people without Midco Cable can still subscribe to it (5.99 per month, cancel any time). USD Coyote sports are already streamed for free from GoYotes.com, but this would be a way to access premium content from UND and SDSU in one place and for one fee.
I think this is a pilot program for maybe an All-Summit digital subscription (for non-televised "third-tier rights" games) next year? If so, I like it. For now I won't be signing up.
But... some of these MidcoSN+ broadcasts maybe/could end up on ESPN+? maybe. I'll keep an eye on it.
