South Dakota beating an SEC team. Denver going 0-3 on the weekend. It will be interesting how the top 3 teams play in the conference.

Two tough opponents at their home courts.... I think both Summit teams win in 5. We're getting ready to go to the Omaha vs Wichita State match. After seeing Wichita State beat Iowa State, I'd have to pick Wichita State tonight. Hope I'm wrong...

Looks like Denver swept Portland… nice bounce-back from the first tournament. So the “big three” teams each have some good wins early. Hopefully some good VB ahead.

The Omaha Mavericks were led by their two OH's Marriah Buss and Shayla McCormick with 17 kills each. Wichita State's Brylee Kelly also had 17 kills. Omaha led the Shockers in kills (64-51), aces (6-2), assists (61-49), and digs (66-61). Near the end of set 4, Omaha led 24 -14 before Wichita scored several match saving points in a row before Buss ended the match with a kill.

No surprises in terms of the top tier teams, all have at least one nice early win, and have challenging non-con schedules. Denver has bounced back from some early struggles, and USD/Omaha have looked like contenders right out of the gate. Surprised to see ORU in the bottom tier. UST has a nice win over St. Louis. Maybe they could end up jumping into the middle tier this year? Western Illinois looks bad.

I watched the Denver games - looks like the team is coming together nicely.

Interesting note:
Right now MasseyRatings is predicting all three of South Dakota, Omaha and Denver to go 16-2 in the conference matches, with both losses for each team coming in road matches vs the other two. The odds of that actually happening are, I'm sure, quite low. But if it were to happen, it would trigger multiple tie-breakers that would end up looking at RPI rank. Wouldn't that be fun?
I guess the message is that there is a gap between the top and middle tiers right now (based on a couple weeks of non-con matches). This is probably partially due to the fact that those top teams have a much more difficult SOS. (Denver is about to play Texas...) Upsets happen, but I think we are probably headed towards another 3-way race.

Denver has looked better once they switched to their 5-1
but im not convinced (yet) that they can compete with both Omaha and South Dakota.
might be my bias lol

My initial thought was that I’d rather have the stability of a cohesive roster with players used to playing together than one built with transfers. The bias might be assuming that big transfers always have a proportional impact? But what do I know…. And I’m definitely biased.

Huge opportunity for the OMavs this weekend, hosting Florida State and then Creighton. Win those, and a mid-30’s RPI becomes reasonable.
