HOFSTRA TOPS CAA 2005 PRESEASON VOLLEYBALL POLL
RICHMOND, Va. (August 10, 2004) – Hofstra is the preseason favorite to claim the Colonial Athletic Association volleyball title in 2005, but the race should be extremely competitive according to a poll of the league’s 10 head coaches. Four different teams received first-place votes in the balloting and six teams picked up second-place votes.
The Pride received four first-place votes and had 70 total points while Delaware picked up three first-place votes and was second in the poll with 67 points. CAA newcomer Northeastern earned two first-place votes and was third with 63 points and defending CAA champion Towson was picked to finish fourth with 47 points. William & Mary, which got the remaining first-place vote, was chosen to finish fifth, followed by James Madison, Virginia Commonwealth, George Mason, Georgia State and UNC Wilmington.
Hofstra welcomes back four starters from last year’s 19-10 team that reached the semifinals of the CAA Championship for the fourth straight season. Leading the Pride will be first-team All-CAA selection Tessa Sphar, who averaged 3.34 kills per game, and sophomore setter Shellane Ogoshi, who was selected as the CAA Rookie of the Year after topping the conference with 11.94 assists per game.
Delaware went 23-9 overall last season and reached the CAA championship game for the first time in its four years as a league member. The Blue Hens return four starters including senior middle hitter Niecy Taylor (.98 bpg) and a pair of CAA All-Rookie honorees in setter Allison Lutz (11.77 apg) and opposite hitter Colleen Walsh (2.81 kpg).
Northeastern finished second in the America East last season and had a 20-11 overall record. The Huskies will be led by senior Larissa Adomat, who earned all-conference honors for the third time in 2004, and sophomore Kira Batura, who was the America East Rookie of the Year.
Towson has gone 27-1 in CAA regular-season play over the past two seasons and is coming off its first conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance. Back from the Tigers’ 25-9 squad of a year ago are senior April Hoffman and junior Christina Grempler. William & Mary will enter the season with a seven-member senior class, including second-team All-CAA outside hitter Megan Eisenman (.339 hitting percentage).
