Aces get weird when the setter (or any other player really) makes a 2nd contact but it's a very poor one. SOMETIMES that can count as an ace, sometimes not. You'll often see "Bad set by xx" in the play-by-play when that happens, but other times it will be recorded as an ace. Some people think if three contacts are made it's not an ace, but obviously that's not true. I had an instance last night where Blossom served and the pass went awry and caused Bower to get called for a bad set and wasn’t counted as an ace. I can understand if it’s a decent pass and the setter just mangles the set and gets called but if the server caused the setter to mangle the ball due to a bad pass, that should be considered an ace. Here are some rules I found from 2018 - fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/Stats_Manuals/VB/2018.pdfThis says if the receiving team is out of rotation, it’s counted as an ace for the server. Huh? Yep. Out of rotation is always an ace. Re: "mangle". I think it depends. If the setter chooses to handset a ball they could have made a different play on, then it might be different. Tough call sometimes. |

One thing that I think would be interesting to implement re: stats. Give the server .5 ace when they cause an overpass that leads to a kill but their front row hitter and give that hitter .5 kills. Might seem strange, but that server should get some credit for those

It's definitely more than just block touches - which, IMO, should ALWAYS be counted as a dig. I've seen standing freeballs by back row players in front of the 10ft line being counted as digs for the player that put it up, yet, those aren't actually "attacks". I've seen well placed bumps to deep corners being counted as digs for the player that put it up too. Aren’t those “attacks”? well that's kind of my point! balls being bumped deep or standing freeballs aren't attacks IMO, but some people think they are, thus a player getting it up gets credited with a dig. All of the ambiguity of what counts as an attack would go away if they just made all 1st contacts after serve count as a dig. |

Avid, I feel like Wright State is headed for another 5th set....per usual. Sometimes per match scoring is fun! Definitely creates more randomness. But it definitely diminishes the value of players who are set up for a ton of 3-0 sweeps on their schedule. (i.e, how high does Matthews go in per match scoring). You can also steal assists more often with per match scoring. |

How’s everyone’s fantasy week going so far? Although I’m grateful my players had good first game performances, it’s always the second game that is never as good and brings all my numbers down. |

Just now checking in. Little Rainbow had surgery on Thursday and both the dog and I are sick, so it’s been a WEEK. eazy and I are close right now. I’m way ahead in kills and blocks, he’s way up in assists and has a slight edge in digs and aces. ETA: Imma need Caitie Baird to go on a serving spree. Rainelle, you’re a queen. Please dig a ball or two. Thanks. |

My criteria for a dig might be something like:
a) any ball kept alive after an opposing “attack”
b) excludes free ball receptions
c) dig is not recorded if the ball is not returned (no matter how valiant the effort)
f) dig is not recorded if the ball goes onto opposing court’s side on first contact, including jousts
g) no limit to how many digs can be recorded in a single rally, so long as the criteria is met
f) digging team does not have to immediately score in transition in order for a dig to be recorded
e) dig is recorded, regardless if an “attack” is made in transition, as to include any “valiant effort” saves that result in a free ball back to the opposing team

In the deciding categories, I'm averaging almost 4 more digs per set, 1.4 more aces per set while Bic's team is averaging just 0.07 more blocks per set.
