I think the Big12 is actually better than last season. Every team but WVU brought back a lot of talent. Oklahoma was young last year and really still are but they are better than last year. Baylor certainly has a lot of youth but they also have a core group with one or more years under their belt. I still don’t see seven teams getting in but very well could see five.

Last year the Big 12 had two host teams and 3 teams make the Sweet Sixteen. This year they’ll have one host team and I predict only one Sweet Sixteen team. There will be fewer teams make the tournament. It’s an exciting season. If Texas wasn’t a member, very exciting. But it’s not better.

If your definition of better is how many top 10 teams you have it’s not. If your definition is how many teams can beat each other on any given night it’s better. TCU and OU were just about guaranteed wins last year for everyone else, this year they are not and W Virginia seems to be.

I only watched the last 2 sets but Tech-TCU was an exciting well played final 2 sets (the first 2 went 24-26 so I assume it was similar). I saw much better volleyball in that match than some of the snooze fest with mediocre play in so called batter conferences I’ve seen this year.

If 7 teams can beat one another but they’re all mediocre, that’s the definition of a better conference? (I do not believe KU and Baylor are actually mediocre - just inconsistent where they can certainly play mediocre on any given day)

Wisconsin-Purdue was hardly a snooze fest. Michigan Nebraska and Michigan Minnesota were and Michigan is supposedly a top 25 team. Meh. Wasn’t a huge fan of Michigan before those matches. I certainly think they’re at a KU/Baylor level, though. The key with a Minnesota match is which Minnesota team shows up. I feel like they have Final Four talent that often look like they’re not even going to host. IMO when what I consider the top 5 teams in the B1G meet - Nebraska, Ohio State, Purdue, Wisconsin, Minnesota - and both teams are at least playing pretty well, it’s some of the most compelling volleyball in the country. The Big 12 will not have a matchup that comes close to those. What makes the Big 12 compelling to me is watching some of the younger players to see how they develop. I’m also interested to see how ISU fares with their 6-2, because they do seem to have turned a corner since the non conference. There are going to be plenty of matches I have no desire to watch in every conference. But I do feel like the B1G, the ACC, and the PAC will have more I want to tune in to than the Big 12. For example, I’m looking forward to seeing if the Fighting Bergmann’s have any kind of chance against Pitt. I think they’re going to get swept, but I’m interested to find out. I thought I was going to try to catch Rice Baylor this week, but then I realized Texas plays at the same time. I’ll hopefully be able to catch a replay. I’m sure the Grahaminator will make sure it goes to 5.

We’re you compelled when #17 Baylor (2nd-4th best in the conference) beat Kansas in 5? Its been agreed the top 5 in the B10 are good and the strength of that conference but the remainder of the conference is somewhere between mediocre and bad. Michigan, Maryland and Northwestern would be middle of the road teams in the B12 and Iowa, Rutgers, Michigan St, Indiana would all be at the bottom of the B12 with West Virginia. The B10 has plenty of compelling matchups but it also has a lot of nights off.

The B10 has plenty of compelling matchups but it also has a lot of nights off. Any time Texas plays I’m watching. I don’t actually think the Texas-Kansas match was that close. The scores in the last 3 sets were not blow outs, but KU had a lot of difficulty scoring on their serve, including a 100% side out in the 5th. Credit to them and a passionate crowd for inspiring a high level of play from the Jayhawks, but they’ve shown that’s a difficult level for them to maintain night in night out. I enjoyed watching KU-Baylor because I thought it might have hosting implications. Now I don’t think it will. I still think that’s the most compelling match the Big12 has to offer that does not involve Texas. I wish it was a little more compelling than it is, at this point. I like watching teams I think have a chance to make deep runs. Specifically if that’s true of the opponent as well. That’s not the Big 12 outside of Texas.
