Fun to be able to go back and watch these non-conference games on BTN+. Michigan simply overpowered Toledo and Morehead State. Probably could have predicted that outcome, but with Toledo coming off a sweep of Arizona State one had to wonder. Loyola was a joy to watch. They possess a lot of qualities that a non-P5 program needs in order to succeed over the course of the season and into tournament time. I know they were picked third in their first A10 preseason poll, but I fully expect them to challenge VCU and Dayton. As for the U-M / Loyola match, a few thoughts: 1) wasn't surprised that we saw Dowd in the 5-1 throughout even with Johnson back on the bench. The mask leads to obvious conclusions, and if she missed all week of practice then of course. 2) the serve receive looked sloppy in the first three sets. Blue was lucky they were able to turn the tide late in set one or they may never have gotten the chance to come back. 3) IF we're going to see Dowd as the primary setter I really like the blocking sub plan with Hallgren on the court. It didn't work as well with Beals in and Grant serving as the setter, but the Wolverines were using Hallgren in a true utility sense (as the roster indicates) on Saturday. 4) Murray and Mruzik - wow. that's it. wow. 5) What happens when Pertofsky returns?  ? I'll post some more general thoughts over on the Michigan page. Great weekend of volleyball overall! |

Maddie Dowd gets a yellow card in set 4! It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a player get one. What happened? Did you see what she did? She argued with the R1 on an over the net call. FWIW, I think he had the call wrong but she apparently was a bit too demonstrative in her disagreement. |
