Plus, Stanford is a fairly small school (8000 undergrads). Louisville has twice as many.
The West Coast (esp California) is notorious for small crowds, too. Compared to, e.g., Berkeley or USC (both of which are much larger than Stanford), Stanford generally gets good crowds. I researched attendance figures for the top D1 schools back in 2019. SU came in 10th in avg. NCAA attendance (Louisville was way down ). SU drew 3K+ @ match. Besides UT and BYU, the rest were B1G. Yeah, not possible for Louisville to do much better right now. As mentioned in my previous message, Louisville's home gym only has a capacity of about 1,000. Every match so far this year has been a sell-oit, I believe, and I expect that to continue through the season which means we'll average around 1,000. We may end up with a weird situation where our average is higher than our stated capacity as they'll do some amount of SRO tickets, and also we may have one outlier as we're playing Notre Dame in the KFC Yum! Center downtown, which can seat about 22k.

Remember that real national level volleyball success is relatively new at Louisville. 2019 when Louisville upset Texas in Gregory Gym was the first ever Elite Eight appearance for the Cards. We've got several decades worth of conference championship banners hanging in LNFCU Arena, but real national level success was just a bit out of reach until the past few years. Prior to DBK's arrival, Louisville Volleyball was playing at the KFC Yum! Center...drawing crowds of maybe 2k on a good night...and we were just lost in the cavernous space. Their practice facilities were in what was colloquially called "Little Yum!", officially "The Yum! Center" (note the distinction between "KFC Yum! Center" and "The Yum! Center") on campus. WBB practiced at Cardinal Arena and also played at the KFC Yum! Center downtown. So the athletic department shuffled some things around, WBB got Volleyball's space in Little Yum! for practice and continued playing at the KFC Yum! Center. Cardinal Arena gained a naming sponsor (L&N Federal Credit Union) and became a dedicated volleyball facility for both practices and playing. It also got some upgrades in the process with new seating and the end zone cantilevered two rows of seating. The net effect was to up the capacity from 840 to a bit over a thousand. Some say it now holds as much as 1,200, but I remain skeptical of that number. For four years of DBK's tenure, just over 1,000 was fine, and then we ran the table for last year's regular season and all of a sudden it's feeling a might bit cramped. Oh, and when they did the upgrades, they didn't increase the already marginal A/C capacity, so when you see me post about it being rather warm in the arena, that's why. Add a couple of hundred people to an already marginal A/C situation and.... And, in the Louisville area, there really are not any good, and generally available, arenas that seat anywhere in between that 1-1.2k amount and the KFC Yum! Center at 22k. We *really* need to build a volleyball arena that seats...oh, let's say about 6k, maybe 8k. We've got a great spot of land available to do it, (Google map location of an open lot on Floyd Street owned by UofL) But of course, it takes money and time to do that. And with the...*ahem*...challenges...that the big money making sports at UofL are having recently, it's probably not a realistic thing in the short term.

It wasn’t new it was remodeled. Seats were added above the end lines. I don’t remember what was spent on it but they have definitely outgrew it. It is very nice and comfortable and a volleyball only arena. I also hope something else could be done in the near future.

The end zone seating almost overhang the backline edges of the playing floor as it is. No way they could have added full end zone sections.

The gym is part of the Student Activities Center on campus which was completed in...1990. Hell, even WBB was playing in Cardinal Arena back in those days, and they draw about 10k these days. "outperforming every single coach in Louisvilles athletic department"...yes...but it's a pretty close thing, to be honest. Justine Sowry is currently 4th ranked in the brutally tough in field hockey ACC. And of course Jeff Walz is certainly in contention with the WBB team routinely. And a couple of other squads aren't all that far behind. Men's Soccer is in the top 25 with John Michael Hayden at the helm, and Dan McDonnell with his Baseball team have established themselves as perennial contenders. It's really a pretty awesome dept to cheer for once you look past MBB, and FB. But, anyway, there's really not much that could now be done, or in the past have been done, with the current facility. The structure of the enclosing facility just doesn't have the flexibility. It really needs to be a totally new build.
