Also. I'd like to hear from all those crazies who kept spouting about Wenaas being the best outside in the B1G. Where did those nutjobs go. i said one of, not the

I'll tell you, it didn't look a toss up on the floor. Gophers win a deuce set, then get outscored by 15 the rest of the way. Good point. Mainly targeted at the VT pollsters who've been hesitant to put Pepperdine in their top 16 (for what reason I have no idea). I had them at 13 last week!

Was at the match. It's still the setting from MN. Plain and simple. People can offer their tortured rationalizations of "low energy" or someone's arm being sore as being the problem. But when the one person who has to contact the ball on every point doesn't put hitters in position to take a good swing...it's disheartening for players. You can pass perfectly, serve well, get a free ball, and still be hitting the ball from your armpit or six feet behind you 50% of the time. Minnesota has some of the best hitters in the country, and they don't get to hit. It's to the point that I'm wondering who stays next year among Landfair, Wenaas, Booth and Wucherer. Assuming Shaffmaster stays.

First, Pepperdine is a really good team, better than 22. I agree that Minnesota is still playing with its lineup and trying to find a rhythem. I still think they will have a great season despite these two recent losses. Go Gophers.

Wenaas had an off night, passing and hitting. Wurcherer struggled at first but had a run in the 4th that brought Minny to within one. Then the passing started going awry again.
I have thought Shaff has been better this year. But she doesn't set well on the run, and she frankly isn't the quickest. When the gophers passing fails, her setting becomes problematic. They have to pass better.

Pepperdine's setter gave their hitter so many chances even when she was brought off the net. Better tempo, better consistency, better location, deceptive choices. She led her team's offense. MN doesn't have that. Shaffmaster is rarely bettering the ball. If she doesn't start to, she'll be pulled, or MN will not be a top 15 team. I anticipate the latter will be the case.

I don't blame the setting. Out of all of the starters, the only one playing better than last year is Shaffmaster.
I love the tough serves from Wenaas but when she is having a difficult night serving, it negatively impacts every other phase of her game.
Almost every match, the person with the wrong colored jersey on the other team looks better than the person with the wrong colored jersey on our team.
Pepperdine was getting to loose balls all match. We were watching loose balls hit the floor.

Saying that, for Minnesota, "its the setting" or "so-and-so had a bad night" is an over simplification. They are trying some things that haven't come together yet and a number of things could be done better. Its not a bad loss. Pepperdine is good. Minnesota needs a few more competitions to iron things out.

New lineup moving Wenass to RS and adding Wucherer at LS for the first time this season. Creates different passing combinations, etc. What a horrible decision. Wucherer and Landfair must have better contracts with Hugh than Wenaas. They’re both the #1 recruit in their class. Wenaas was only #3. Lol

Minnesota needs a few more competitions to iron things out. Thing is, though, a week from now, you're getting ready for conference matches. (And this goes for all them - Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, etc) Time is almost up.
