Mavs pummeled the Yotes in games 2 & 3. Can they close out a big match? Seems not in set 4...

How do you let that ball fall on set point?!

Omaha has struggled with 5-set matches; I’ll predict 3-2 Yotes. I hope you’re right…

How do you let that ball fall on set point?! After falling behind 1 - 10, Omaha comes back to tie it late, then South Dakota holds on and wins by two. On to the 5th...

Wow. That was worth the price of admission. This Yote team isn’t perfect, but they have some mental fortitude. Go Yotes!

Didn't turn out the way I wanted, but after the comeback in set 4, a service error when I believe it was 25-25 and another one in the 5th when it was 14-14 kind of summed up the Mavs last night. Wish it would have turned out different, but the match was very exciting. I'm a Creighton honk 1st, but will also cheer on Omaha.

There was a noticeable presence of Mavs fans in Vermillion. That was nice to see. Lots of USD alumni live in Omaha, too. I think there is often a good contingent of Yote fans at VB and BB games there. A good start to the rivalry. Also, both teams have lost to the other as a 1-seed in the Summit Tournament recently. (same with Denver) Could happen again. Will be a fun storyline through the season.

Omaha has struggled with 5-set matches; I’ll predict 3-2 Yotes. I hope you’re right… I thought this was an easy pick. What I didn't see coming was the Mavs' subsequent 5-set loss to South Dakota State. The 5-set matches are killing the Mavs' resume'. OTOH, what a great comeback from the Yotes. I question their ceiling being real high in the postseason, because their offensive output is so heavily weighted to Juhnke and Harms, but as a fan you have to admire that the Yotes know who they are and what they want to do, they do it well, and they stick together and don't fold. Both Yotes and Mavs have excellent setting and floor defense, and IMO the Mavs could be the more potent team due to balance, but they just can't get over the hump to translate the close calls into wins, and the loss to SDSU is a red flag that also puts them in a deep hole to win the title. You can see them trying to develop McCormick into an alpha hitter, and she has that potential but as a freshman she's not consistent enough like Juhnke. IMO the Mavs should put more load on Buss. Ruch, Debow, and Jurgensmeier are progressing nicely and are getting more involved in the offense. This team will be very good in future seasons IF they can find replacements to the level of Clarkson and Centeno at setter and libero.

Yeah, I was at the match, and McCormick (who impressed me last year, too) seemed to lose a little mojo toward the end of the match, with some serve-receive errors. It felt like there were some confidence issues when you see your star player struggle. Clarkson is an experienced stud, so maybe she needs to be that confident voice in those tight matches? Coach Williamson mentioned that at times Ruch can just "come out of nowhere" and burn you. She definitely played well that day. Some of her shots seemed well-placed and just impossible to defend, especially her "middle slide" to the right. Juhnke struggled a bit last year with serve-receive from time-to-time as well, but has been much better from the back row this year. At the start of the Denver match, Juhnke couldn't get anything going, but then Harms came alive offensively. So She does have that safety valve. Evelyn Diederich (#4, 5-8 OH) was a complete surprise to me and many fans, but she has actually been really effective at times and has a nice feel for when to off-speed tip kills. Small hitters seem to be really fast, too. Fun to watch. So her development might help take some more pressure off of Juhnke, too. Also, Denver was very impressive at times, if inconsistent. Long rallys were sparked by great defense and saves/ pancakes on both sides. I don't think any of the top teams are going away, the Tournament should be exciting (a hot ticket at Baxter).

Harms is a great counterpunch to Juhnke. You can see the Yotes attempting to establish upperclassmen Diederich and Adams as offensive weapons, and they will need to produce to provide the needed balance. Beckett has struggled in limited action, but she's only a freshman and has time to develop. One other thing I'd like to see for the Yotes' sake, is Schram, who is an excellent setter and server, become more effective on the dump. I haven't seen Denver but am excited to hear the conference tournament will be exciting. How many teams qualify?

I haven't seen Denver but am excited to hear the conference tournament will be exciting. How many teams qualify? 6 out of ten, with the top two seeds getting a BYE. Has been the same format for many years, but we have only had 10 in the conference starting last year. On Schram, in an early season post-match presser, Coach Williamson talked about telling Schram to use the dump more. Some setters are more aggressive on that naturally, I guess, but Schram has had to force herself to try it more. She actually does pick her spots well, but often doesn't think about it enough. It helps that Williamson is a former Setter, and she has coached multiple all-conference Setters at USD. Denver's middles are big and talented. When Brianna Green gets on top of a ball, she puts a dent in the floor. I was impressed with Denver's back row play, too.
