I'll bite. I find this post rather disingenuous. Even a cursory google search will tell you that 1. Karen Shelton played at West Chester, not UNC, so she wasn't coaching athletes she was just playing with, 2. She already had some experience as an assistant coach at Franklin & Marshall, and 3. The NCAA didn't start hosting national championships for field hockey until 1981, her first year coaching, so the landscape couldn't have been more different than it is today. Maybe we'll look back in 40 years and consider this a great hire, although I would be surprised if that is the case. Oops. My bad. Shelton did play for West Chester, not UNC. I noted that she was hired when she was 23, one year older than Erin Matson. In that one year she apparently spent some time as an assistant coach at Franklin & Marshall. Are you saying this makes her hire much less controversial that Matson's? The two hires are very similar, actually. Both players were multi-year team captains and winners of the Honda award. Both players had US national team experience, which included time overseas. As for the NCAA starting hosting championships in 1981... who cares? Championships existed before then, and people cared about them, even if they didn't have the NCAA label on them. I wonder why you doubt she will be successful. She has become a great player partly through effort and determination, and partly by learning to do the right thing. Both of those qualities should serve her well as a head coach. She knows how to win and has a successful program to serve as a strong starting point. I wouldn't bet against her winning a title in her first try as coach, later this year. I like the hire. It's a top tier school showing confidence in a young woman who clearly knows how to play. Knowing 'how to play' has no bearing on knowing 'how to coach'. The hire is being done for the usual reasons, saving money and the M:F percentage so that they can avoid Title IX accusations and can continue funneling money to basketball and football.

I find this hire more controversial than her predecessor because collegiate athletics has evolved. If her wikipedia page is to be believed, Shelton was a part-time employee for her first 8 seasons. I also don't think coaching your own teammates should be understated. I don't want to put words in your mouth, but are you saying you don't find substantial differences between the collegiate sports landscape of today and the AIAW days? Hiring standards for a department with a 9 digit budget haven't changed since then? Maybe the field hockey landscape with only 79 D1 teams is more inline with the past than D1 volleyball currently is. Looking at this through a volleyball lens, is there a situation where a similar hire would be considered good? Glass at Penn State after 2009? Rettke after 2021? Frankly, as a former collegiate female athlete, the fact that UNC made this hire for a program with 10 NCAA championships shows me how little we still matter to administrators. Edit: appreciate the discourse and happy to take this to a dedicated thread

As has been said elsewhere , you wouldn’t hire Eggleston to run Texas Volleyball right now.

So many naysayers! I suspect Erin had been prepping herself to get into coaching and seeking guidance from the staff on aspects of that while she was a player. Her bio notes that she minored in coaching education, after all. Prepping herself to get into coaching and coaching a small business aka a national championship program. Yes seeking guidance from people who have been coaching and should have been names coach. Her minor in coaching would not prepare her. There isn’t anything on hiring, budgeting, conflict resolution, anything. Her coaching minor prepared her to be a head coach just as my French minor prepared me to be a translator to a French ambassador. 😂😂. You might want to look at the class options before you say that.

Knowing 'how to play' has no bearing on knowing 'how to coach'. The hire is being done for the usual reasons, saving money and the M:F percentage so that they can avoid Title IX accusations and can continue funneling money to basketball and football. That's what you say. What I see is that UNC is the top school in the country for Field Hockey, and it's been that way for a while. I'm sure much of that was due to the coach, but she certainly wasn't the only reason for their success. The entire program has been supported by the school to a point where it's the best.

Each person doing their part to make UNC a success in Field Hockey. #1, in fact. Honestly, I'm disappointed in your attitude. As a former collegiate female athlete, you should know from personal experience how difficult it can be to be taken seriously, to be given an opportunity to prove yourself. Erin Matson didn't wake up yesterday and decide she wanted to coach field hockey. She clearly knew this years ago. She was captain of her team three years running. Read the bio again, and you can see the work she put in to make this happen. And who better to have as your model than your own (10 NCAA title winning) coach? It's quite a resource to have on hand to learn from. I very much doubt UNC would have made this move without being advised by Karen Shelton first. If she can believe, why can't you?

I say she had the best training you could buy - being in the UNC field hockey program. As team captain for three years, she's had plenty of time to lead on the field. She also has her own business and ran her own field hockey camp. Alexander the Great became king of Macedonia at the age of 20. He seemed to do OK. Why don't we lighten up on the armchair quarterback critique a little and wait to see what happens?
