that's right. I'm here to comment on the fact that Mike Sealy has made UCLA women's volleyball so irrelevant that I could not find a thread on this board for this season dedicated to discussing the team, going back several pages. Actually when I wrote this the thread was on page 9, and I only went back 8 pages.
Beginning in around mid season 2018 I was arguing for Sealy's dismissal. People generally said I was being too hard on him, and should give him more time... after all he had had his players for only 6 seasons at that point. And the assistants weren't his, he was given them.
Well, three more seasons have come and gone. with his assistants.
Let's compare 3 time periods: 1) Sealy with Banachowski recruits, 2) Sealy with Sealy recruits, and 3) Banachowski with Banachowski recruits:
Here is how Sealy did with teams where a majority of the players were recruited by the prior coach Banachowski:
2010: Round of 32 (24th)
2011: National Champion (1)
2012: Round of 32 (24th)
Ave National Finish: 16.33
% Elite 8 or higher: 33%
**edit** updated to include 2022 Selection Show
The following are the 10 years where most of the starters were Sealy recruits:
2013: did not Qualify aka (64th)
2014: Sweet 16 (12th)
2015: Sweet 16 (12th)
2016: Elite 8 (6th)
2017: Sweet 16 (12th)
2018: did not Qualify aka (64th)
2019: round of 32 (24th)
2020: round of 32 (24th)
2021: round of 16 (12th)
2022: did not Qualify aka (64th)
Ave National Finish: 29.4
% Elite 8 or higher: 10%
By contrast, here are the last 10 seasons under prior coach Andy Banachowski:
2000: Elite 8 (6th)
2001: Elite 8 (6th)
2002: round of 32 (24th)
2003: Elite 8 (6th)
2004: Elite 8 (6th)
2005: Sweet 16 (12th)
2006: NCAA Semifinal (3rd)
2007: Elite 8 (6th)
2008: Sweet 16 (12th)
2009: round of 32 (24th)
Ave National Finish: 12.5
% Elite 8 or higher: 60%
So, here we have a program that over the 10 years prior to Sealy finished the season averaging nationally Top 13, and played in the Elite 8 60% of the time, and under Sealy, with Sealy recruits, did not average finish in the top 25, missed the NCAAs THREE (3) times, and has made the Elite 8 only once in 10 seasons
Recruits prior to Sealy could be shown legitimate Final Four results, and expect to reach the Elite 8 in most of their seasons at UCLA. Now, recruits can not be reasonably assured they will even play in the NCAA tournament each year.
If anybody thinks this isn't a fireable record, please let me know why. I'm open to input.
In the meantime, I just cannot watch UCLA women's volleyball at all, it's just too painful to see what that man has done to the program. The players deserve better. The tradition of the program deserves better.
