Liskevych Era Opens with Win
Portland, Ore. - The much-anticipated start to the Taras Liskevych era began Thursday night in victorious fashion with the Beavers staking a convincing three-game victory over the host Portland Pilots, 30-23, 30-16, 30-23.
Oregon State used an efficient and aggressive attack directed by senior setter Desma Stovall to take control of the match in the early going. The Beavers helped to make Stovall’s job easier with excellent passing, allowing her to use the many weapons at her disposal. Stovall’s primary target sophomore Kristin Murray posted a game-high 11 kills while also leading the defensive effort in the front row with five blocks.
“Our hard work throughout fall camp really paid off,” said OSU head coach Taras “Terry” Liskevych. “We had some ups and downs tonight, but we were the aggressor. We set the tempo early playing an aggressive style of volleyball. I could tell in the warm-up we were really ready to play against an opponent.”
Things got off to a slow start with Portland taking the first two points of the season and a 3-1 lead before the Beavers righted the ship to run off 10 of the next 11 points in taking the momentum and the lead 11-4 behind Katelyn Healy’s serving, including a pair of aces. Murray converted five kills in the game, while middle blocker Brittany Cahoon added four kills and three blocks to get the Beavers rolling.
Cahoon’s middle blocking partner, Abby Windell scored five kills in the second game. Windell and Healy helped get a block party started with each repelling a pair of attacks by the Pilots in the game. The Beavers finished the match with 11 blocks on the night.
In the third game with Oregon State holding a comfortable lead, several Beavers enjoyed their own momentous occasions stepping onto the court for the first time in their collegiate careers. Redshirt freshmen Betsy Cale and Caitlin Zimbrick saw action, as well as true freshman Ashley Evans. Sophomore Rachael Withers also saw significant playing time in the final stanza after watching from the sidelines for two years (the first as a redshirt freshman and the second recovering from an ACL injury).
A trio of Beavers, Abby Windell, Brittany Cahoon and Katelyn Healy, each notched eight kills while Kristy Mortensen contributed 11 digs before resting in the third game.
