Beavers Continue Winning Ways, Finish Sweep of Portland Schools
Portland, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team received a scare Friday afternoon before rebounding with hustle and improved passing to knock off Portland State 3-1 (30-19, 17-30, 30-26, 30-21).
“This was a good test,” said head coach Taras Liskevych. “You always learn under adversity. Portland State adjusted very well, and while we served well in the second game, they passed the heck out of the ball.”
The Beavers won the first game handily before the Vikings turned things around in the second game with superior passing. Portland State continued to pour it on in the third, until OSU’s offense reawakened late in the game to notch the comeback win.
OSU needed a few points to get on track falling behind 1-4 early in Game 1 before middle blockers Brittany Cahoon and Abby Windell got into the act with two kills apiece to ignite the offense and propel the Beavers to an 8-5 advantage. Late in the game back-to-back blocks by Windell with assists from Taylor Studzinski and Kristin Murray continued OSU’s momentum to take the game 30-19. In the initial game the Oregon State defense held the Vikings to a .049 hitting percentage and limited PSU’s top two offensive weapons to a combined one kill.
The Beavs passing broke down in the second game limiting the offense to eight kills and a .100 hitting percentage. Compounding problems Oregon State suffered from five serving errors as OSU dropped its first game of the season 17-30. Cahoon continued OSU’s solid defensive effort at the net with a pair of blocks.
OSU’s struggles continued after the break with the Vikings holding a strong lead at 21-15, a pair of Oregon State timeouts reignited the Beavers’ offense. Ashley Evans guided the offense with the aid of Cahoon and Windell, who combined for three kills and a block as the Beavers gained the lead at 23-22. After trading points three kills by Cahoon and a block each by Cahoon and Windell pushed the Beavers to the brink, where Evans and Murray earned the final points to win the game 30-26.
Oregon State used their momentum from Game 3 in the early stages of the fourth game. Three kills apiece by Cahoon, Windell and Murray pushed the Beavers to the victory 30-21.
Four Beavers’ attackers finished with double figure kills with Windell posting a match-high 14.
OSU fans got a glimpse into the future when Evans, a true freshman, helped lead the Beavers in their third game comeback and again late in the match. Evans finished the match with 16 assists and four kills.
